Yes, I have rebooted several times but nothing.
I am really out of my comfort zone with this boot disc. I havent got a clue what I'm doing. Is there any other way to test the drive? Sorry about this but I dont tinker at all with the computer.
CD drive has completely disappeared

Borrow an original, retail copy of a Windows OS disk (any Windows version). Go into bios and change the boot order so the cd is the first device. Then reboot. That is how you test the drive. Either that, or replace it with a new drive and see if that works.

I will try to find someone who has one of these discs and do as you say.
If it works, and it boots up, what do I do then. If it doesnt boot up what will that mean to me?

If it does not see the bootable cd at boot, the drive is most likely shot and you should replace it.

Allan, just an afterthought. If I purchased a cheap external cd drive, would that work? Would I be able to play cds as normal through the laptop? And do you think I would be able to put my cds onto itunes as i did before? I wouldnt be able to install it, so I would look for a usb connection plug and play type thing.

It's just as easy to replace the internal drive - probably cheaper than buying an external one.
But to answer your question yes, it would act the same way the internal drive does.
