My computer will not start up correctly. It says 'loading your personal settings' but nothing happens. It is frozen here. i have tried to do system restore, but it didn't work. I tried to start in safe mode and AVG scan.I have AVG on the computer. It showed trojans, etc but I don't think it got rid of them. This has happened in the past but I was always able to do system restore. I don't know the virus it has. In the past it was 'Security Tool" virus so now since I don't know what it is infected with, i don't know how to get rid of it. I have Windows xp. any ideas?
Thank you

Lets's first try this:

Can you get in to an admin level account in Safe Mode?
If so, create a new account/user and try logging into the new account/user in regular mode. If you can get in, consider that the old profile may be corrupt. You then may want to migrate the settings and documents to the new account/user.

Is your Pagefile too small or have no Pagefile? If it is then read the
following KB article.

Error Message: Your System Has No Paging File, or the Paging File Is
Too Small

Other Possibility:

Windows XP Welcome Screen Appears to Stop Responding (Hang) During Logon

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I am not clear if you sucessfully booted the system into safe mode or not.
If it did not boot safe mode let us know so that we can get you to our folks that deal with unbootable systems.
In the beginning there was the command line.

It boots properly in safe mode, but when I log in using the regular log-in screen, it freezes up. The safe mode appears to work quite well, apart from the system restore being rejected. Sorry about that.
