But it clearly says here : http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5VD2MX/
that my motherboard supports 4GB ram
I just don't know if E6600 supports the x64 instruction set
I probably updated the BIOS in a wrong way, that's why maybe it doesn't show up (the remapping feature)
System won't use more than 3GB of RAM

The E6600 supports x64, and your motherboard does support 4GB of RAM (4GB will operate successfully, and an OS may be able to access some of the uppermost 1GB, depending on hardware address requirements). But in order for an OS to access the full 4GB, the board must support 8GB (I believe yours does), and be able to move the top 1GB above the 4GB point (remapping).
Do you know what the BIOS version was previously, and what it is now you have attempted the update?

Do you know who made your motherboard? Besides ASUS? HP/Compaq are users of ASUS that modify board board features. This is called OEM Branding.

I would call ASUS and see what they recommend. It maybe a defective board.

Does the system now identify the BIOS version as 1017?
