No, let's keep using it as normal for a bit. Let me know if it reoccurs; or if you've used it for a few days without one, also let me know. I'll feel comfortable we got rid of it then. Reboot as needed.

I can help you with that now. First...do you have a recent backup? Occasionally it may hang. It's only happened once to me in dozens of runs, but better safe than sorry!

I need to do a backup. Do you mean just using an external hard drive and backing up all my important files? Also, what may hang? I am just a bit confused.

Yup, just the important files. By hanging, I mean chkdsk will lock up. It's rare, but it happens.

OK, go ahead and run chkdsk. Open a command prompt and type the bold text then press Enter.
chkdsk /f /r

It may take some time to run..they warn you that it could take days to run a full one, although it usually goes much quicker than that. It depends on the size of the disk and the number of files. I'd run it overnight if possible. Let me know how it goes.

I typed chkdsk into the run prompt and it ran in a terminal window. Then it closed. So I typed in chkdsk /f /r and that came up with a terminal window saying it need to run on a restart. I restarted the computer and nothing happened. What should I do now?

Let's try it from the Recovery console that should have been installed with Combofix.

  • Restart your computer
  • Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
  • Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
  • You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.

Once you're at the prompt, try chkdsk c: /f /r and let me know if that worked.

I typed in "chkdsk c: /f /r" and it came up with "The parameter is not valid. Try /? for help". I even tried "chkdsk C: /f /r" and that didn't work either. What should I do now?

ah, there is a space between the c: and the /f as I typed it above...there shouldn't be. Just make sure the prompt starts with C:\ and then type
chkdsk /f /r

The prompt says C:\Windows, but when I typed in "chkdsk /f /r" the same prompt talking about "the parameter is not valid" came up. I also tried the following:

chkdsk /f This resulted in the not valid parameter
chkdsk This said "The volume appears to be in good condition, use /p to check the volume anyway" . When I typed "/p" I got the "Parameter not valid"
chkdsk /r This said the same thing as chkdsk

What should I do now?

I've never used it from the recovery console before, but I see what is happening. It turns out there is no /f via the recovery console.

chkdsk /p /r

should work. The /r means it will attempt to repair, the /p forces the exhaustive check to run.
