BleepingComputer.com: General Functions and Browser Slow + Freezing and Crashing

The following are point describing general situation with my computer.

About my sytem:

- This system is a little more than a year old and has been running slower and slower for the last 2 months.
- I run Malwarebytes (purchased version) and have Trend Micro Platnium running on schedules.
- Upgraded the browser to Exploer 9 yesterday with the intention of helping increase speed. Did not do much and I don't like as much as the old version but I guess it takes some getting use to (can't find History pull down menu beside the Favorites tab, do you know where I go?)
- The hard drive was quite full, so I backed up alot on to a external drive. Was 53GB of 465GB, Now 384GB of 465GB.

General Problems:

- Computer Takes about 4 minutes to boot.
- Explorer and files on the computer take a long time to open. Sometimes will not open or freeze.
- When downloading files using rapidshare or other services there was little effect on the performance of my functions on the computer. Now during downloads I can not open other Explorer windows, the computer is gernally sluggish and all the other problems are enhanced.
-Once the computer crashed when I tried to open Task Manager, in an attempt to shutdown a frozen Explorer window. First I got a small box pop-up and a black background. The box basically explained that the Task Manager process was not able to run then I got a blue screen explaining that the computer will be shutting down.

Problems during the preparation process for Bleeping Computer:

-Microsoft FixIt Explorer Add-On FixIt did not work or would not run.
-During the Preperation guide process, pictures in your guide where not visible.
-Computer crashed the first time I ran GMER and a blue screen came up.

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

The browser seems to be running a bit better, but I can not tell yet. One thing I did forget to mention is that when I try to shutdown software I also get a "not responding" most of the time, then after a while it responds. + when I type into browser emails or in word for instance, there is a delay when I am typing ... hope this additional info helps. Adobe Acrobat

I see that you are using Adobe Acrobat which if fine for editing pdf files but because today’s viruses are using vulnerabilities in older versions of Adobe and because it is easier to update I suggest that you use the free Adobe reader or Foxit reader to view all PDF files

you don't need to uninstall Acrobat, but do use one of these free readers

You can download it from here Adobe free reader
uncheck any of the extra stuff that they offer

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53.5 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing Foxit PDF Reader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel

• click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.

Download HijackThis

• Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  
• Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  
• Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  
• Click on Install.
  
• It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  
• Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  
• Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.

It did not allow me to copy the results so I went into the file as you recommended and found the following log, but just incase it does not show, there was one infection called "win32 adware.toolbar.dealio"

That is something that is minor and is most likely in system restore or combofix backup folder

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware - Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.


The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point. It will also remove all the backups our tools may have made.

Any programs and logs that are left over you can just be deleted from the desktop. TFC is a free temp file cleaner that is very easy to use, I would keep this and use before you do any scans or when you want to free up some space.

:DeFogger:

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.

• The application window will appear
  
• Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  
• Click Yes to continue
  
• A 'Finished!' message will appear

• DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK

:clear system restore points:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

• Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  
• Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  
• Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  
• choose your root drive (normally C:)
  
• after it calculates how much space you will save it will open up a new window
  
• Select the More options tab at the top of the window
  
• Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
  
• go back to the disk clean up tab
  
• put a checkmark in all - except compress old files (leave this unchecked)
  
• click Ok then click yes

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created and clean unneeded files

• From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  
• Click once on the Security tab
  
• Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  
• Click once on the Custom Level button.
  
• Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  
• Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  
• Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  
• Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

• When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  
• If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:

• WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.

I am at the "clear system restore points:" section.

Both System Restore Point and Cleanup System do not display the options you describe:

Under Sysytem restore the software restored my system to yesterdays status and under Cleanup System there is no More Options Tab and there is not Clean Up System Restore button the only option you have is Clean Up System Files

Should I continue with this the way it is?

Thanks again for all the help, but there is still something going on with my system,unless this is normal. When I open a browser it takes about 20 to 30 seconds before the browser opens, this did not happen before and it does not happen on my other computer. Even when I try to scroll down on a page or press some function tab a on that page to link, there is also a delay of 10 to 30 second, almost like something is freezing it for a moment.

I replaced the old Explorer with version 9 just before we started. I have done the revision of explorer and it did seem to wor better right when I did it. Now the computer stalled and all the icons on my desk top disappeared when I tried to rename a picture, that particular folder turned black for an number of seconds. The scrolling is delayed in most screens in IE again, unless you hav been in the same screen for a while.

Sorry for the hassle, but I was wondering what was going on, or if it can be fixed.
