Hello,I hope someone can help.

I am trying to help my boyfriend fix his toshiba laptop which definitely is infected with nasty malware. He has been running quite a few years without any protection. Sigh. The tricky part has been that the worst infection (ymt.exe, I think!)does not allow him to search at all. So it's been tricky figuring out how to download antivirus onto his laptop but I've managed! He has Spy Bot Search and Destroy. We found a ridiculous number of threats and infections which we fixed. But the problem still existed. I then downloaded and purchased (on my laptop) PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Antivirus. I was then able to install it on his laptop using my memory stick.

I performed both an Intelliguard and a full scan. In total I found (and fixed) 19 threats and 102 infections. Goodness me. But despite doing all of that I cannot get rid of this fake Vista antivirus.

I also looked in the task manager and there were three ymt.exe. I stopped the process on all of them. Two haven't returned, but the largest one just keeps popping up. I know they are connected because if those windows are up and I stop the process on the ymt.exe the windows close.

The problem is how do I remove this thing? None of the scanners I am running are able to detect it and I don't know enough about removing malware to figure this one out on my own.

If anyone can help that would me amazing. Thank you in advance.

Cheers, ljrobins

Thank you Heir! I am proceeding as requested. It will be a bit slow as I have to download all the installs on my laptop first to install on my boyfriend's using a memory stick. His computer is very slow and I can't browse due to the antivirus pop ups so it will take some time. I will get to step 9 eventually!

The PC has what is called "Windows Security" and a window pops up saying the computer is infected and under threat. It encourages you to register and purchase the antivirus software. Then, when you try to browse (unless visiting a secure site) it takes you to a page that says you can't go any further unless you fix your infection.

The GMer didn't come up with anything hidden from what I can see in the log, but I don't know what I am looking at either.

I do know that when you check the task manager that there is a ymt.exe file in progress. Each time I turn the progress off it returns. It seems to coincide with the antivirus pop ups. When I turn off the process the boxes disappear. But then the file is back in the task manager next time I open it.

I have used Spy Both Search and Destroy, PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Antivirus and TDSSKiller to no avail. They did find a lot of other threats and infections (which I repaired) but not the one causing this. Beyond purging the computer entirely and starting over I am at a complete loss.

There was not much in those logs.

In that case we'll do it like this

To protect your clean computer, please use Flash Disinfector

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from >here< and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Note: If using Firefox right-click on any download links and choose Save As

Please download OTH to your flashdrive
Please download OTL to your flashdrive

Double click the OTH file to run it and click Kill All Processes, your desktop will go blank.

Posted Image

Then select Start OTL. OTL will now run

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

  • Click the Internet Explorer button, post these logs in your Virus Removal topic.

Please do not PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!

heir ... when I hit internet explorer does it have to open for it to work or does it just check the program? The reason I ask is that IE won't open in his laptop. It never responds.

The logs (OTL.txt and Extras.txt) are saved to the same folder as OTL was run from (your flashdrive).

Move the flashdrive to the clean computer and post the logs.

Put the flashdrive into your infected computer

Step 1.
OTL-fix:

Run OTL from your flashdrive as before

  • double-click in the box under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom.
You'll be prompted if you want to load a custom scanfile. Click OK.
Browse to your flashdrive and select scan.txt. click Open and the box will be populated with the txt-file.
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post the OTL fixlog

Step 2.
MBAM:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Step 3.
Things I would like to see in your reply:

  • The content of the fixlog from OTL in step 1.
  • The content of the log from MBAM in step 2.
  • Information on how your computer is running now.

Please do not PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!

Running the Malwarebytes has become a whole other issue. I was able to install and complete a scan. Yes, indeed there are still 7 viruses (trojans) and other malware that were hidden that had to do with the original problem. However, when I went to remove them the program stopped responding.

I did a restart (proper) but this damn machine is running so slow it's proving to be an effort getting this malware program to open again. I started up again and let everything settle before I tried loading the maleware program but it won't load! Possibly I am not being patient enough. Will keep trying and report once I've completed the process and post the results.

Thank you. I knew there were still some little devils hiding in that computer somewhere.

I haven't been able to load it again so I uninstalled it and now I am going to try installing it again and starting the scan over with repair. Will keep you posted. Hopefully I didn't mess it up. :-)

Hello heir:

The mbam report is pasted below. The computer seems to be running more smoothly after the clean and reboot. I'll check later and spend more time with it but for now I have to run off to work. THANK YOU!

Hello heir:

Okay. So here it goes. Everything is moving very quickly now except any browser activity. I tried to load firefox and it pretty much was slow like molasses times three. So, I deleted it because my plan is to download it and reinstall. Made sense to me since it was infected. However, I am now trying to load IE and it's also slow like molasses. Everything else I bring up is pretty speedy. My guess is that the infections messed up the browsers? Should I also delete IE? Please advise.

Edited to add: Seriously, this is a lesson in patience. I have a dude that keeps saying his computer is bleeped despite the fact that it is working pretty fast now. The browser troubles makes sense since those were one of the areas that were super infectd. My guess is that this is process that needs some time and working to fix. No?
