BleepingComputer.com: Win32/Olmarik Trojan. I think !

I have XP home edition. No more access to Internet. Msg says: "Internet Explorer cannot display webpage. What you can try: diagnose connection problems". Tried with and without router, no go. Not able to open Malwarebytes Anti-malware, Spybot or anything related to Internet. Only ESET NOD32 works without update: finds Win32/Olmarik Trojan but is not able to clean it. The trojan comes back. Tried SASHACAT suggestion posted 5 february 2010 by using Spyware Doctor thru USB without success. Tried the manual removal instructions from Spywarevoid.com: couldn't find any files and only 2 main registry entries which I didn't touch: browserhelperobjects & windowsNT. Tried also thru USB Rkill files 4 times each in normal and safe modes. No joy. I followed Boopme instructions dated April 6 2011 09:09 PM. Hope everthing is ok, had to use USB to transfer files from 2nd computer with Windows 2000 to XP.

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

• Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

• Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Thank you for replying. I thougth my topic was lost until I searched row by row and found it. As I said, I didn't have Internet, so I used USB to transfer Combofix to the desktop of my non-working computer. It didn't work. I tried directly from the USB. No go. I noticed that it was a .exe file so I changed it to a .com. It worked! But since I didn't have access to Internet I couldn't get Microsoft Windows Recovery Console. Combofix worked on and fixed my computer. I could have access to Internet again. You will find included the Combofix.text. Thank you, it was almost like a miracle !

Please do the following:

• Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  
• Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.

• Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  
• Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  
• Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.

• When asked, allow the activeX control to install
  
• Click Start
• Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.

Sorry, CatByte, I was so excited last night that I did performed a full scan without "save log" ckd in the Settings. As I remember, there was no infected files. I performed a quick scan this morning without forgetting the log. As instructed, I did the ESET online scan. My computer seems to be back normal and for that I thank you very much. Your Java is out of date.
Java™ 6 Update 22 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now.
An update should begin; > follow the prompts.


Clear Java cache

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup) If you do not see the icon, look to your left and click 'Switch to Classic View'.

• On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  
• Next, click on the Delete Files button
  
• There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
  
  Applications and Applets
  Trace and Log Files
  
  
• Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  
• Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  
• Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

You can delete the DDS and GMER logs and programs from your desktop.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix

• Make sure your security programs are totally disabled.
  
• Click START then RUN
  
• Now copy/paste Combofix /uninstall into the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

If there are any logs/tools remaining on your desktop > right click and delete them.

• Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :

  This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  
  
  
• Make Internet Explorer more secure
  
  • Click Start > Run
    
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    
  • Click on the Security tab
    
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
    
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  
  
  
  
• Download TFC to your desktop
  
  • Close any open windows.
    
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
    
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
    
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
    
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
    
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
    
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
    
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
  
  It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

• ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.
