Hey guys, been awhile hehe
im gonna make this short and sweet. Im building my new gaming rig and i cant decide between an i7-960 + evga ftw3 x58 with 12gb Tri-Channel 1600MHz or the Asus NF200 chipset board with 8gb Dual channel RAM and an i5 -2500k. Which is gonna do a better job in gaming performance?

Thanks,
Nick

I would say the second option because of the Sandy Bridge processor.

I saw the difference in cache, but is it going to make a major speed difference between tri channel and dual channel? As well the .5Ghz clock difference on the two?

Get the Core i7 for more cache and triple channel memory support.

The difference in cache is not a major deal and triple channel support isn't either, unless you are desperate to see an increase in PCMark scores. Also, keep in mind that the i7 960 is using an older socket that is going to be phased out soon, whereas the Sandy Bridge CPU's use a newer one. Remember, there are architecture differences between both the older Bloomfield and the Sandy Bridge. It is really a toss up over which you want, I would get the newer of the two.

At this point, going with a Sandy Bridge makes more sense from a performance/overclock/money perspective. If I needed a platform, for gaming as the primary use, it would be hard to pass up a P67 board and a 2500K/2600K. Match it with a couple of 4gig sticks of memory, and a really quickvideo card, it will be good to go for at least 6 months..........till the next big thing hits.

That sure sounds like a great deal. Was that a open box sale?

Open box sales are usually from people who return an item to the store and they cannot sell it with manuals, cables, or discs. These are not refurbished products. Depending on the store, the item has probably been tested to see if it works, but be careful with motherboards, CPU's, and GPU's, they are tested, but often not stressed.
