Please help,
My laptop is running Win XP Home and has recently been infected with XP Total Security 2011. It displays a nag screen to buy product, blocks internet and causes MANY false virus notifications. Ive tried several different things and cent remove it.

I tried running Rkill.exe and Malwarantibytes, but they were blocked as well as control panel and internet access. I was able to get Rkill & MBAM to run by renaming thee file and extension to .scr. Rkill functioned, but did not kil the prog. MBAM gound many things, removed, but did not remove the virus/ (This may be because the mbam definitions are from 3/17 and I cant update). Also tired in safe mode w/ networking but internet still bocked and could not remove.

Please help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

Thanks.

DR

Hi,

dds.txt part you posted there earlier isn't complete one. Please re-run DDS and copy-paste output here.

Blade,
Thanks you for your assistance. I see that you are correct. The post was missing some of the DDS log. Here is the complete log.

Hi again,

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe. Let ComboFix install recovery console when prompted.
Then post the resultant log.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one ((Adobe Reader X + 10.0.1 update for it)) here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't (unless you want to) install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 24.
  • Click the
    Download
    button to the right.
  • Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
    Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u24-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck Carbonite online backup trial if it's offered there.

* Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is UNchecked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish.

Post back its report, a fresh dds.txt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log.

Hi,

Let MBAM fix its findings.

Quote

System is running OK, but no wireless internet connection??

What does device manager say, are there any items with an exclamation mark (to access device manager double-click on the System icon in Control Panel, choose the Hardware tab, and click Device Manager) ?

Please run Notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy and paste the text in the quote box into a new file:

Quote

@echo off
>Log1.txt (
ipconfig /all
nslookup google.com
ping -n 2 google.com
route print
)
start Log1.txt
del %0

  • Go to the File menu at the top of the Notepad and select Save as.
  • Select save in: desktop
  • Fill in File name: test.bat
  • Save as type: All file types (*.*)
  • Click save.
  • Close the Notepad.
  • Locate and double-click test.bat on the desktop.
  • A notepad opens, copy and paste the content it (log1.txt) to your reply.
