My name is Georgi and and I will be helping you with your computer problems.
Before we begin, please note the following:
- I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
- The logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me.
- Stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
- Instructions that I give are for your system only!
- Please do not run any tools until requested ! The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
- Please perform all steps in the order received. If you can't understand something don't hesitate to ask.
- Again I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so. I will not help you if you do not follow my instructions.
IMPORTANT NOTE: One or more of the identified infections is related to the rootkit TDL4. Rootkits, backdoor Trojans, Botnets, and IRCBots are very dangerous because they compromise system integrity by making changes that allow it to be used be the attacker for malicious purposes. Rootkits are used be Trojans to conceal its presence (hide from view) in order to prevent detection of an attacker's software and make removal more difficult. Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. They can disable your anti-virus and security tools to prevent detection and removal. Remote attackers use backdoors as a means of accessing and taking control of a computer that bepasses security mechanisms. This type of exploit allows them to steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which is send back to the hacker. To learn more about these types of infections, you can refer to:
- What danger is presented be rootkits?
- Rootkits and how to combat them
- r00tkit Analysis: What Is A Rootkit
- How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
- What Should I Do If I've Become A Victim Of Identity Theft?
- Identity Theft Victims Guide - What to do
- When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
- Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?
- Where to draw the line? When to recommend a format and reinstall?
We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. If you decide to continue please do this:
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
- Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php - For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer - For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe
Please read carefully and follow these steps.
- Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
- Extract its contents to your desktop.
- Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

- If an malicious object is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

- If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
- Select Skip to the sptd.sys.

- It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

- If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
- If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
Regards,
Georgi

I'll be unavailable for the next 2 days. (26 and 27 may).
I will reply at Monday (28 may). Sorry for the inconvenience!

I do not see any instance of active malware in the logs.
But before I set you free I'd like to do a few more checks.
Run Scan with Malwarebytes
I see you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer.
Please start the application by double-click on it's icon.
Once the program has loaded go to the UPDATE tab and check for updates
See the picture below:

When the update is complete, select the Scanner tab
Select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
Please save it to a convenient location and post the results in your next reply.
Regards,
Georgi

I'll be unavailable for the next 2 days. (26 and 27 may).
I will reply at Monday (28 may). Sorry for the inconvenience!

Ran MalwareBytes and came up with another Trojan this time Trojan.Agent vs. Trojan.Hiloti which I cleaned out earlier today. Also when I rebooted as instructed by MalwareBytes I seemed to lock up in the reboot and needed to do a hard reset after nothing happening for 10 minutes.
Here is the MalwareBytes log.

Things appear to be all in order and I really do appreciate it!!! I do have a few questions about all of the logs, and programs we downloaded to the desktop...do I need to keep them or can I just click and drag to the recycle bin? I also have the Erunt program to I see listed under my add/remove programs and another program I am not familiar with called Wirelss WEP Password Spy? Do I need to keep these?
Thank you again for all of your help!
Warm regards,

Don't worry - we will remove them at the end of the cleaning process.
About the program Wirelss WEP Password Spy could you tell me what you used it for ?
The software is usually used to recover all wireless network passwords that have been stored on the computer.

I ask that you refrain from running any tools yourself until requested.
The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time.
Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
Thanks for your understanding.
Don't worry about the file - it is located in the quarantine directory of OTL where it can't do any damage to your computer.
The files in OTL quarantine folder will be deleted when you uninstall OTL.
Before I give you my final recommendations I want you to do one final thing.
Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.
- Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. - Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
- Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
- Click OK.
- Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.

Sorry about running the scan...curiousity did kill the cat and I will refrain from doing anything else. That being said I did install AVG Version 10 and then promptly disabled the Resident Shield since I had read that in the preparation guide that I completed before our first contact. Did I over think that one too and should I enable that now?
As for the Wireless WEP Password Spy I have no clue how this got on the computer, nor is it used from what I can tell and looking at when it was last used the only thing I can come up with is that one of my kids coming home from college with there new laptops were too impatient to wait for me to come home so I could get the wireless network key from its secret hiding place under my desk blotter so they took matters into their own hands and tried to figure it out on their own. Wonder where they got that impatience and curiosity from??
Here is the RKUnhookerLE.exe log and I will be patiently waiting your reply!
