I installed Windows XP and now my sound doesn't work. My computer is a Compaq C700 laptop, it originally came with Vista. When I go to control panel/Sounds and Audio Devices it says "no audio device." So if you can help me it would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome william429
Have you yet been to Accessories > Entertainment > and looked to see if Volume Control and Sound Recorder are listed there
The next stop would be (while you are in Control Panel) >System > Hardware > Device Manager
Near the bottom there should be Sound, video and game controllers > Click the + sign beside them and about 6 items should be listed
If any of these have a ? or ! beside them, you need to find or update drivers for them

Also is there a speaker icon near your clock at the bottom Right side ? ?

Thank You
EDIT -
Follow the directions from hamluis first (we hit the answer at the same time  ) -

Find your system...navigate to drivers...see if there are XP drivers...if so, download/install the one for audio/sound.

Louis

There are no drivers.

What audio chipset does it use? We may be able to find drivers somewhere else. You can find out what it is using Windows unknown device identifier http://download.cnet.com/Unknown-Device-Identifier/3000-2086_4-42618.html
