This is an ACER 5100 Aspire laptop purchased in 2006 running Vista Premium Family Edition.
Everything from startup to shutdown has slowed greatly. There has never been any manifestation of malware. Is this just age? The battery weakening? Or can something be done?

Well!! You want me to time every operation??!! I could do a few if you need it, but first I will try a general definition: when you are ready to give up and use another computer instead, or when you just set the thing aside and then come back half an hour later to see if it has done what you want, that is slow.
