Toshiba a505
I've been using the HDMI to the plasma with no problems till today. no audio, the drivers are up to date. video is perfectly fine.

It's got the realtek audio and intel hdmi drivers.
the sound control panel shows the hdmi out and shows the sound as being there via the graphic green bar display. I can set the default to the hdmi and still no sound. laptop speakers work fine.

I had VLC but uninstalled it when the audio track would go off and it took changing the track selection a few times for the sound to come back on.

ideas?

Whether current or not...I would uninstall the audio drivers...they could be damaged.

You've run the Windows Sound Troubleshooter?

Try checking Windows Update to see if an HDMI/HD Audio driver update recently installed. I had this happen one time on a customers computer. I rolled back the driver to the previous version and sound was restored.
