no sound at all!

I have a Dell Dimention 4300, running xp pro service pack 3. I have no sound! I've tried other sound cards but I still have the same problem. when i trouble shoot this, it says that my drivers are installed, but have not started. I have tried uninstalling & reinstalling them...still the same! any suggestions?

You've run the Windows Sound Troubleshooter?

You've checked Device Manager to see that the audio drivers are properly installed under Sound/Game/Video Controllers?

You have the XP drivers Dell put forth?

What sound cards have you tried/have on hand?
