I was unable to download the dedicated .iso burner because my other computer uses Vista. But I made sure to use the image option in my Toshiba CD burn software to create the CD. With the new CD I still get the same blue screen with "STOP: c0000139 {Entry Point Not Found}..."

I'm afraid I don't know of a way to resolve your problem without either a repair installation or a destructive reinstallation. If your system did not ship with an XP CD, did it have a recovery image installed? If so, you may have to use it. Alternatively, you can try to borrow an XP CD from someone (must be the same version and service pack you have installed) and do a repair installation.

I'm willing to try a repair or destructive installation. Nothing crucial on my hard drive. What's the proceedure?

There doesn't seem to be a recovery image installed. How would I know?

From what I can tell the Dell Optiplex GX270 did not ship with a recovery partition. If you purchased the system from Dell you should have received a cd to restore the system to the original installation. In my opinion you have two options:

1) Contact Dell, explain your problem, see what they say or
2) Purchase a new OS disc retail

Perhaps someone else can think of other options, but I cannot. Truly sorry I can't be of more help.

Just a thought here, what do you use to conduct your trading? Is it done through the web browser, or do you have to install an application onto your computer? Also, who do you do it through?
(Instructor) You put a Linux machine within a Windows machine within a Mac? That's great! Now where is that paper on BitTorrents vulnerabilities that was due last week?

My broker is TradeStation, and I use their desktop trading platform (not browser based).

I just contacted Dell and they said there was a problem with the hard drive and it needs replacement. I would also have to buy a replacement copy of Windows 7 for $90 which is how much I spent for the computer in the first place. So if this problem is not fixable I'll just buy another computer. However, I may have access to a copy of Windows Vista that I can use to reinstall.

The Vista CD I have is formatted for Toshiba computers, so that option is out. I could use a generic copy though right?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok. I obtained a copy of Windows XP Pro and was able to run chkdsk /r. It went up to 28% completion, and then said "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems." Is there anything else I can do at this point?

That particular error messaage usually signifies a problem with the partition itself, the file system (NTFS), or the hard drive.

Of these three, the hard drive is the only item which can be tested to verify proper functionality. To do so, I would download/run the appropriate hard drive diagnostic from the website of the hard drive manufacturer.

Others here may have successful experiences with this type of error...but I would just run the diagnostic. If the drive checks out as functional, I would then clean install the O/S.

It is very possible the hd is beyond repair. Try to recover whatever data you need by slaving the drive - and then replace it.

Well, miraculously, I was able to format the drive and reinstall Windows without any problems. Everything seems to be working fine. Could there still be a problem?

I'd suggest you go to the website of your hd manufacturer and download their diagnostic utility, burn it to cd, and run it. I added a link to a tutorial on slaving in my previous post just in case you end up needing it.

Thanks for all your help Allan.

I ran the Dell Disk Self Test and the drive passed. When I reinstalled Windows I remember at one point it said that some errors were fixed (or something like that). Maybe it had something to do with the partition. I bought this computer used on Ebay a few months ago, so who knows what the problem could have been.

Well, glad you're up and running. If I were you I'd keep a backup of critical data.
