I left my computer on today and went to the store for an hour - came back to my computer running CHKDSK. After it finished, it froze. I restarted and it ran CHKDSK again, and froze again. Now when I restart I get a message: "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start correctly. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this." The options "Safe Mode" "Last Good Configuration" "Start Windows Normally" freeze the computer. To my knowledge, no software or hardware was changed. I use the computer for stock trading and nothing else. The only software running was my trading platform and AVG antivirus.

System:
Dell Optiplex GX270
Windows XP Pro (pre-installed; no cd)

Please help,

Michael

My computer said something to the effect of "We need to check your hard drives for consistency." I don't remember which chkdsk was being run. I did not initiate the chkdsk.

Could you please provide instructions on how to do this? Are you referring to tapping F8 upon boot?

Boot to your XP CD and choose the first repair option. That will take you to the recovery console. Once there, run chkdsk /r

I would also suggest that if you have any documents stored locally on the machine that would be difficult to replace now would be a good time to boot into a live CD/USB and copy them to some form of external media as a precaution. If all your information was stored online and you can easily reinstall your trading software then this probably isn't as much as a concern.
(Instructor) You put a Linux machine within a Windows machine within a Mac? That's great! Now where is that paper on BitTorrents vulnerabilities that was due last week?

I did not receive a cd with this computer. Windows XP Pro was pre-installed. There is no Recovery Console option upon boot.

Create Recovery Console CD using ARCDC:

Please download ARCDC from http://artellos.com/arcdc-page
Then:
1) Double click ARCDC.exe
2) Follow the dialog until you see 6 options. Please pick:Windows Professional SP2 & SP3
3) You will be prompted with a Terms of Use by Microsoft, please accept.
4) You will see a few dos screens flash by, this is normal.
5) Next you will be able to choose to add extra files. Select the Default Files.
6) The last window will allow you to burn the disk using BurnCDCC

Your ISO is located on your desktop.

Ok, done. I have the CD. What do I do next? Thanks for your help.

Boot to it, choose the recovery console, run chkdsk /r

In order to boot to the cd, make sure your cd is the first device in your bios boot order.

STOP: c0000139 {Entry Point Not Found}
The procedure entry point LdrSetMUICacheType could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll.

Okay. Let's try it this way. Download the recovery console .iso from here: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?/topic/150212-boot-to-recovery-console-wo-xp-cd/. Burn it to disc using a dedicated .iso burner (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm). Then boot to the recovery console with your new disc and see if you can run chkdsk /r
