BleepingComputer.com: WMP 11, looped video has slowdown at the end

I am using Windows Media Player 11 on XP SP3. I have all drivers and such updated on my computer. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling WMP 11.

Now what happens is I will be playing a video clip, any length and any format, and when it gets to the end just before it is about to loop again, the animation, rather than being smooth, will have a half second of slowdown. Sometimes and most annoyingly it will freeze at the first frame for several seconds before continuing the loop.

I just reformatted my computer and prior to this WMP ran perfectly; my video files were looped smoothly so that you didn't even know the video file had reached the end. Now I can always tell on the exact same files because it will not be smooth.

This problem happens regardless of what else my computer is doing. I've tried playing with the performance settings of WMP to no avail.

does it do the same thing in other players?

No just WMP. I'm using BS Player right now and it works great. The main problem I have is the freezing I described.

stick with bsplayer then or upgrade to wmp12 if you must have wmp. IMHO wmp is nothing but trouble. Do you have all the codecs?

I'm using XP so I can't upgrade to 12. I have the latest version of K-Lite codec pack.

that rules that out then. try turning off hardware acceleration in windows media player in the options and see if that helps. I am not sure where the setting is b/c I never use wmp.

maybe when it goes to restart the video it is bogging down in memory. run task manager or process manager and loop a video and see if your memory gets near the maximum. How much do you have installed? This might explain why bsplayer works better (It is less resource heavy than wmp)

As it plays, the cpu is at 10, and memory is at 26-28kb. When the loop freezes at the beginning, the cpu drops to 0, and memory drops to 25kb. A few seconds later the loop resumes and cpu and memory are back to normal. I have a dual core 1.7g, and 2g ram.

That all sounds like it should be fine and not giving you problems so I guess its not a memory thing. I'll do some googling but I can't think of anything else right now. Maybe try the bc chat room on irc.

Alright I'll see if anyone can help me there. Thanks for your help. It's just I don't even know what the problem is, just a symptom, so Googling is extremely difficult and I found nothing.

I hear ya, that's why I ditched wmp a long time ago. It is just bad and always has been, too many tiny hiccups that are annoying and unsolvable. For me it plays very jerkily but bsplayer, vlc, media player classic, all play the same videos without a problem. IF you can uninstall and go back to wmp 10 maybe that will work, but I don't know. Sorry I am not of more help.

I'm liking BS Player so far, so I think I'll stick with that for the most part. Thanks for trying to help though .

It's a good player, I used to use it exclusively but switched to media player classic. Anything is better than windows media player. Happy computing!
