NVIDIA GeForce Display Driver Issues Not responding, recovered, blue screen, etc.

Okayyy, here we go. I have just gotten a new(ish) desktop, Gateway FX Gaming series something something, Specs:

AMD Phenom™ 9600 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
3.0 GB RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002)
Phoenix BIOS v.6.00PG
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 1.7GB
yadayadayada. you know the deal.

Similar to a lot of NVIDIA GeForce grahpics card owners, I am experiencing A LOT of trouble with this thing. Actual system runs beautifully, but when it comes to gaming, its terrible. I tried playing Black Ops before I was aware that there was a problem with the card, and it played amazingly on the highest detail settings...for about 10 minutes. Then it started with the black screens. about 1 second of black screen, then it would come back and my game would force quit. I tried updating the drivers, from the NVIDIA website AND from windows update. Apparently, neither has worked. Occasionally, I'll even get a blue screen. Weirdly, I can run 1080p content from Youtube, but I can't play Doom II. It has gotten to the point where it flashes black screen twice and blue screens with the slightest attempt at playing a game. I took the graphics card out and it was REALLY hot, so apparently it's overheating? I thought the power supply wasn't plugged into it all the way, so I let it cool down, plugged it back in, made sure the power supply was in all the way (a nice audible CLICK), and tried again, but still a NO-GO. Please...HELP ME. Guhh. Thanks in advance.

First thing I would do is remove the card and blow it out with compressed air. Then after installing the card start the computer to verify the cooling fans is running. If this was someone elses PC I would also check that they didn't setup a custom video card profile limiting or set static the cards fan speed. Try running a game with the sound off and listen to the cards fan. If it doesn't speed up and get louder during gaming then something is amiss.

Also I would not expect it to get hot during video since this barely puts any strain on the card.

The gpu fan is running at 30%, what you can do is by increasing the fan to maybe 70% and see if the temperature has gone down but first do what Baltboy suggested.

1. IF the 8800GT was an addition to the existing system, there is the possibility of the PSU not being able to provide enough power to the card. Also, check the power cables and card alignment.

2. Keep the side panel of the cabinet open, ensure sufficient airflow, turn your system on, start up Black Ops, get into some serious action and see if the system remains normal.

3. Last but not the least, reinstall your video card driver by downloading it from here.

I'm sorry, but i don't have any compressed air at the moment. I can get some, but is there anything else I can do in the meantime? Also, the card came with the computer when it was bought from Best Buy in June '09. And from what I can tell (the power supply is very vague...) it is a 400w. Alignment is all correct. And how do I change the fan speed? Would that be in BIOS settings? It seems as though the system ALWAYS crashes when I'm running Zune software and listening to music.

You could use RivaTuner to increase your gpu fan speed. Also to increase the other fans, you can use SpeedFan. If you don't have compressed air, what i usually do is get a hair dryer and switch it to cold air then use it to blow out the dust also don't let the fan speed when you blowing out the dust on one of the fan.
