BleepingComputer.com: Problems connecting to internet

Hey guys. I am running Vista and am having problems connecting to the internet. When I try to connect to my home wireless it says it connects but then there is a red x between unidentified network and interenet. So it is connecting to the router but then not connecting beyond that. Microsoft has some diagnostics that may help but I can"t get there from the bad computer. I have an old computer that I am able to log on to post and down load any information or fixes. If anyone has any information or help on how to fix it please let me know.

Can you do an ipconfig /all and post the results please?

Do I do that from the run comand or from a c: prompt?

OK, I was able to do it but what resutlts do you need? I don't know how to copy the results like a log file.

Acording to the log you are not recieving an IP address from the router. Addresses that start with 169.254.xxx.xxx are from automatic addressing in windows which means it could not findor get an answer from the DHCP server on the router. Check your wireless settings on the router to be sure you are using the same channel, SSID, and wireless security settings on your Vista machine.

I am not really sure how to check those settings in Vista. I have opened the router settings and entered the network security key which is a 26 character number but when I try to see it on the vista machine it only shows an 8 character number like this "********" So I am not sure if it isn't taking the security key or what.

Try temporarily not using any wireless security and set the Vista PC to no security as well. Then at a command prompt do ipconfig /release followed by an ipconfig /renew. If the Ip given is anything other than the autconfiguration you're good. Then setup the wireless security again to protect yourself. using either wpa or wpa2.

One other thing. It won't connect even when I use a network cable to try to connect that way either.

I just tried to change the network key to one of the alternate keys and it still comes up as unidentified network.

I am not sure how to disable the security on the router. I don't see that option on there. I can disable wireless but I don't see anything about security.

I may have found it hang on.

Nope. I thought I found it when I found a spot that said Privacy but when I check that the vista machine doesn't connect.

I tired to manually set up a new connection but it kept going back to the original connection.

What model router are you using?
