Have you checked the Troubleshooting section of the Dell support page...for your particular system model?

well to be honest about it its my dads computer he said that he would be on it and then all of the sudden the computer turn off and a blue screen showed really quick couldnt even read what it said. when i got it i was able to turn it on and it loaded and everything was checking the specs of the computer when it turned off and since then when it gets turned on it only give that message. " read disk error" He only used the computer for internet use and to pay bills not thing else.

Any ideas what could be?

Thank you

If you can start the computer (even in Safe Mode) please follow these instructions -

Please download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

If the above doesn't work boot to your XP CD and choose the first repair option. That will take you to the recovery console. Once there, run chkdsk /r

Sounds like you need to replace the hard drive.

I think that Allan has already supplied that answer.

If you want confirmation...you should download the appropriate diagnostic from the website of the hard drive manufacturer...burn the diagnostic to CD properly...then attempt to run the long diagnostic test.]
