When I open IE8, I get the following screen:

When I click OK, I get this screen:

I follow the directions on the last screen, but the next time I open IE, they come up again. How do I fix this?

In IE go Tools>Internet options>Advanced tab, click on "Reset" button.
Restart IE.
Same issue?

See here: http://www.kirbtech.com/blog/2009/03/20/a-program-on-your-computer-has-corrupted-your-default-search-provider-setting-for-internet-explorer/

WARNING!!! This suggestion involves editing of the registry. Improper editing of the registry can cause your computer to become unbootable. ALWAYS backup your registry before modifying the registry.

To backup your registry, create a System Restore point. Alternatively, you can use the free utility ERUNT to create backups of your registry: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

For more information about modifying the registry, see this Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/256986

OK, I want to try this, but I don't know how to add a new “Expandable String value”, the information on the link you gave me did not explain how to do this. The other article on modifying the registry is pretty hard for me to understand, I'm not exactly and "advanced user". Also, if I create a system restore point, how will I know if I need to use it?

Just create new restore point and you should be fine.
