It's working beautifully, i wish i'd known how to do that from the start. is it ok if i ask you a few questions related to this in order to prevent this from happening again? This has been a great learning experience.

I'm glad to hear that, but this is in fact a very unelegant solution, and I would not recommend doing it unless you know what you are doing. We altered the partition table of your harddisk so your computer would start from the recovery partition instead of the normal one (which contains windows).
Since the recovery is supposed to restore everything, it is also supposed to restore the original partition structure.
If you have additional questions, just let me know.

yes as it was doing the recovery i was wondering to myself if i was going to need to go into testdisk again and re arrange the partition structure. but there was no need.
as to my questions... how did this happen?
i mean all she said she did was run malware bytes.
If a file was infected, could mbam delete hal.dll for example? or any of the other needed boot files?

No, MBAM cannot delete any of such files, they are whitelisted. My guess is that somehow the filesystem structure had become damaged/corrupted, although it is also possible the infection messed something up. If you'd had CD capability, it would have been a bit easier since we could have used the Recovery console, which has a few useful tools.
I don't think you'll have to adjust the partition structure, but in case, after a reboot the computer boots straight in setup again, let me know, so we can set the other partition bootable again (I would find it very sloppy if the recovery wouldn't check and adjust the partition table and MBR, but it is possible).
