BleepingComputer.com: Downloaded virus from the Internet, now cannot boot Windows XP Pro (SP3) in ANY mode...

And yes, I am an idiot...

I have an HP Compaq nc8000 laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3. I'm also running PC Tools Firewall Plus, PC Tools Threatfire, Avast Free Antivirus and Spyware Terminator. Hijack This and RKill are installed as well. I even use the Google Chrome browser with the WOT toolbar. Unfortunately, none of those safeguards were able to block a stupidity problem which originated somewhere between the seat and the keyboard!

This morning, I clicked on a link to a site that my WOT toolbar flagged as unsafe... and I ignored it and proceeded to the site anyway. After about a minute I tried to exit the site, which produced nothing but a repeated popup (it was mostly a blank white field, no ads of any kind). I was unable to close the browser (same popup), then I was unable to log off of Windows and had to do a "hard" shut-off with the power button.

When I tried to restart, I got the following black screen: "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this..." I attempted to reboot in Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration and Normal. (I didn't try Safe w/Networking because my laptop only connects to my home network via router, or Safe w/Command Prompt because I'm not familiar enough with the feature.) A blue screen flashes for a fraction of a second so I can't read it, then it continuously loops me right back to the same black screen described above. Obviously, I downloaded one of those real nasties that disables the startup. Pretty good work, eh?

Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows XP Installation disc or the Recovery Console.

But I do have a clean PC running Vista Home Premium (where I'm writing this from), and after some research, downloaded the AVG Rescue CD to my USB flash drive. I followed the directions to locate the BIOS settings and changed the boot sequence to USB first, but when I saved and exited, I got a black screen with "disk error, press any key to continue." I tried this several times and got the same error message. My flash drive is only 2GB and has other files on it, so I don't know if that was causing the error. And rather than burning the AVG Rescue to a CD-R and trying again, I would rather do the SMART thing and just ask for help, before I do even more damage.

We will need to view the system status from an external environment. You will need a USB drive and a CD to burn. There will be several steps to follow.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer

• Run GETxPUD.exe
  
• A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  
• Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  
• The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  
• Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  
• Next download driver.sh to your USB drive
  
• Also Download Query.exe to the USB drive. In your working computer, navigate to the USB drive and click on the Query.exe. A folder and a file, query.sh, will be extracted.
  
• Remove the USB & CD and insert them in the sick computer
  
• Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  
• The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  
• In some computers you need to tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD, in others is the Esc key. Please consult your computer's documentation.
  
• Follow the prompts
  
• A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  
• Press File
  
• Expand mnt
  
• sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  
• sdb1 is likely your USB
  
• Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  
• Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  
• Press Tool at the top
  
• Choose Open Terminal
  
• Type bash driver.sh
  
• Press Enter
  
• After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  
• Then type bash driver.sh -af
  
• Press Enter
  
• You will be prompted to input a filename.
  
• Type the following:
  
  
  Winlogon.exe
  
  
• Press Enter
  
• If successful, the script will search for this file.
  
• After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched

  Leave a space among the following Statements:
  
  dd is the executable application used to create the backup
  if=/dev/sda is the device the backup is created from - the hard drive when only one HDD exists
  of=mbr.bin is the backup file to create - note the lack of a path - it will be created in the directory currently open in the Terminal
  bs=512 is the number of bytes in the backup
  count=1 says to backup just 1 sector
  
  
  It is extremely important that the if and of statements are correctly entered.
  
  
• Press Enter
  
• After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as mbr.bin
  
• Plug the USB back into the clean computer, zip the mbr.bin, and except for the mbr.bin zipped file, post the contents of the report.txt, filefind.txt and RegReport.txt in your next reply. The mbr.bin zipped file must be attached to your reply.

Thank you for your response! Here's an update...

Last night I tried one more thing and burned the Avira AntiVir Rescue to a CD. This morning, before I had a chance to read your post, I tried booting the system with the CD but soon realized I didn't finalize it properly to make it boot-able, however... while I was figuring that out, the boot options menu timed out, Windows started successfully in Normal Mode (!), and then it proceeded to ChkDsk. I let it run and saved the event log which is copied below.

When Windows completed its startup, I got a Limited Virtual Memory popup notifying me that the paging file is too small. Other than that, the system appeared to be operating normally. I turned off the network connection at the terminal and restarted in Safe Mode.

I opened CCleaner, cleaned the browser cache and ran the registry cleaner which found the following file: rucentt1.Ofx.exe. I then ran a full scan with Avast with no infections found, and then ran HJT in Safe Mode and saved the log file, which is also copied below. I set Avast to run a boot scan and restarted the system in Normal Mode. Avast boot scan reported no infections.

Once back in Normal Mode, I ran full scans from PC Tools Threatfire with no infections found, and Spyware Terminator with no critical objects found.(I was unable to run these in Safe Mode.) Just to be safe, I ran RKill which terminated the following processes: system32/grpconv.exe and C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTALL~1\UPDATE~1\agent.exe. I then ran another HJT scan in Normal Mode and it's also copied below.

I turned the network connection back on to check the browser settings, and was able to connect with no problems, slowdowns or anything. The only problem I'm having on startup is that Limited Virtual Memory popup. I followed the instructions (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Change > click 'Custom Size') and it showed the paging file at only 256MB. However, I have to log on as an Administrator in order to make that change, and I am unable to open my User Accounts on the Control Panel.

I also got an alert from PC Tools Firewall Plus that one of my Java programs was trying to act as a proxy, but I denied it. Other than that, it's almost as if nothing ever happened!

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to respond with your detailed instructions! If you still think it's advisable to follow through with them, I can do so. In any case, here are my log files...

If you were able to create the CD, lets run those commands as suggested. That will give me a better look at the system.

If you mean the GETxPUD.exe CD, I haven't created that yet but can try to. Should I also download driver.sh and Query.exe to my USB and follow the procedure as you outlined it? Also, my USB has other files on it (mostly Word, PDF and photos). Will they be affected by these downloads?

dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1 dd is the executable application used to create the backup if=/dev/sda is the device the backup is created from - the hard drive when only one HDD exists of=mbr.bin is the backup file to create - note the lack of a path - it will be created in the directory currently open in the Terminal bs=512 is the number of bytes in the backup count=1 says to backup just 1 sector
