BleepingComputer.com: My laptop has internet connectivity problems

I have an Acer Aspire with Windows 7 which I have owned for about 9 months. Comcast is my internet provider and so I have Norton Security Suite. I use Firefox as my browser.

Ok, here's the problem. Within the last three months or so, I've had problems with my internet connection. We have seven computers in the house (only one is hardwired), 2 game consoles also on the wireless - all of which do not have this same problem - so I know right away it is not a network, router, wireless router, etc issue. It is an issue with my laptop specifically, although what about my laptop I am unsure.

What happens is, I will be online surfing, playing a game, watching a movie, whatever. Suddenly whatever I'm doing stops. The page won't load, the game freezes or I log out, the movie stops, etc. In about 15 seconds, if I look down at my wireless access icon on the taskbar, it has that little yellow triangle with the exclamation point in it. It will not come back no matter how long I wait. All the other house laptops, game consoles, and computers are still able to access everything, only mine has the problem. It takes a reboot to reconnect. If I try to have windows fix the problem, it goes through its little process and just as it says "resolving problems" the entire computer freezes and I have to actually do a hard shut down by holding the power button down - I cannot recover from that step (I avoid doing that now). This internet connectivity problem might happen every couple of hours or so.

I do not know specifically what changed at what time to possibly cause this problem.

What I have done (based on info from other sites with people experiencing similar issues):
made sure my drivers are completely up to date.
disabled the microsoft virtual wifi adapter.
made sure the pre-installed McAfee stuff is completely uninstalled.
uninstalled Bonjour (some program that gets installed with iTunes)

This morning it happened four times within two hours. I'm usually pretty good at fixing things, but this has me completely stumped. Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

you mentioned Norton and Mcafee - what do you have on the PC now , having two security suites or antivirus running at same time can give lots of issue
If you removed Mcafee did you use the removal tool - see below

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

Go to start menue then right click computer then click manage, then find your wireless adaptor under networking adaptors then right click on it, then click driver tab then click uninstall then restart the computer, then wait for the driver to reinstall, after that it shouldn't have any other issues. The reason I say this is because if the troubleshooter freezes when it tries to repair then it means the driver is most likely erroring out and causing an issue with the troubleshooter.

Thank you both for your reply. I uninstalled the driver as suggested and let the computer reinstall it on reboot. Today will be the first time I will be on the internet for any length of time after doing so - we'll see how it goes.

If that has not fixed the issue, I will post back here with the information you requested, etaf (I am going to create the first bit of information now and save it and then if I lose connection today will create the second type of info at that point and post back).

the results are very useful as you have lost the connection to the router

You will need to log into the router and change the wireless channel in use - change to channel 1 or 11 - post back make and model of your router , you have two other signals using channel 6 which can cause interference.

Next steps are to update the wireless adapter driver - can we have the exact model of the acer aspire laptop - we can then link to the acer website for a driver download

and a tcp/ip reset

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

If you receive the message
The requested operation requires elevation.
Then please open the command prompt as administrator - as requested above
Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

A couple of questions - is changing the channel on the router going to be a problem for the rest of the computers in the house? Why is is that only my laptop seems to have a problem (if the two other signals are causing interference then why is this computer the only one in my house to lose the connection)?

Also, should I do that tcp/ip reset now or must I wait until after I update the drivers and change the channel on the router?

wireless router is Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router - model WRT54G

laptop is an Acer Aspire 7745

OK - driver updated, computer rebooted.

Channel changed to 1 on Linksys router - ran the Xirrus program and noticed that there are also a few on 1, so changed it to 11 (no one else is on 11) - here's the screen shot of that.

If it disconnects again, would you post the ipconfig /all and ping tests again please - finger's crossed the driver update resolved the issue

Boo hoo. I thought it was doing so well. For three days I had no disconnections whatsoever! In fact, my internet browsing seemed faster and smoother than it had before - especially with games. Not sure whether that was something you did or just my perception (wishful thinking?). At any rate, about 20 mintes ago I lost connection again. My son is sitting right next to me, his connection on his laptop is fine. I went to use our family computer to get on this website to see what tests I needed to run again - that connection is fine. So again, it's just my laptop.

you updated the driver from the ACER site - did that go well ? NO errors

did you uninstall the adapter and then point to the new Acer drivers download when rebooted

you talked about mcafee - what ohter firewalls do you have - are you paying a subscription to mcafee ?

can we run xirrus on one of the other PCs - so when you disconnect we can see if any other wireless networks have appeared and interfere

things like microwave and cordless phones can cause these issue

it may be worth resetting the router back to factory reset - log into the router and make a note of all the router settings before resetting

The driver installation went fine. However, I did not uninstall it first and then point to the new Acer drivers as you suggest. I'm not sure how to do that as it seems to want to just automatically install when rebooting from somewhere without asking me first. Do have some pointers on how to go about that?

I am running Norton Security Suite. Although McAfee came pre-installed, I get Norton for free through Comcast (my internet provider). I did use the McAfee removal tool as you suggested (that was the second time I had used it, so I'm pretty sure it's all gone). No, I am not paying a subscription to McAfee.

Yes, next time I get disconnected I will run Xirrus on one of the other machines and post the results.

Oh, I REALLY don't want to reset the router. Do you think I need to? I guess if all else fails I'm not going to have a choice, but it seems to me that if all other computers, etc in the house are connecting just fine, there's no way it can be a router issue. It's definitely something within my laptop.

Its possible Norton is blocking , although usually xirrus still sees a wireless network - so does seem more like a adapter issue
As you get Norton, from comcast - it may be worth removing that as well, although this will mean you have no virus protection.
It maybe worth, changing to MSE http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ and see if that helps for a while - from other forums , I have advice that the windows 7 firewall is perfectly adequate - BUT not a security expert
