Hello, Appear to have been hijacked. IE keeps opening at http://a-search.biz/ . Norton found numerous threats. Deleted some with Norton. Some failed; deleted these from My Computers. Also followed instructions on Symantec site to delete entries from my register. Norton scan is clean. Still being hijacked. Downloaded HijackThis and Registrar Lite. Ran Registrar Lite & HijackThis. HijackThis turned up some things that looked bad from previous experience, e.g. a-search.biz as my IE default, so I had HijackThis fix these. Still being Hijacked. I've attached the log. Would appreciate any help. Thanks

david196, welcome.

Please print this out and follow ALL these directions carefully.

Make sure 'show all files' is enabled:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup.
More detailed instructions here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406

Delete if still present:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys.dll <== file

Start HijackThis and tick the boxes next to all these, then close all browser and explorer windows, and tell HijackThis to "Fix checked" if still present.

Reboot and Install the prevention protection below and help your friends from being infected on the Internet.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.
Index.dat Suite helps with this.
http://support.it-mate.co.uk/?mode=Products&p=index.datsuite

Insure that Index.dat Suite is Setup to empty the Temp folders especially
C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Local Settings\Temp
then run the Find and create the run.bat and reboot to have it remove what it finds.

{user} is the User Account ID.
Removal of infections and prevention protection should be installed on ALL User Account IDS.

Download and install WinPatrol.
http://www.winpatrol.com

Browser settings for increased security:
http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm

Install IE-SPYAD then run the install.bat in the ie-spyad folder and SpywareBlaster then keep them up to date as today's Internet is full of nasty infections.
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Install Windows Service Pack 2 and ALL Critical Updates.

CalamityKen, Thank you for your quick response. Unfortunately I wasn't successful. I followed your instructions down to "Reboot and Install the prevention protection..." I also cleaned out some Temp folders, emptied my Recycle Bin, and installed Windows Service Pack 2, but when I rebooted the computer in normal mode, I still get redirected to a-search.biz when I open IE, and the following line is still listed by HJT.

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=Userinit.exe,_huytam_

When I check and Fix this entry, it's still there when I Scan again. However, when I first Fixed the three entries you listed I recieved the following error message:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34544} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys.dll (file missing))
Error #62 - Input past end of file

Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were doing when the error occurred
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2800.1106
HijackThis version: 1.98.2
