BleepingComputer.com: PC WON'T BOOT UP-STICKS ON CRCDISK.SYS

Hello peps
Having a nightmare!! PC working fine last night. I came to switch it on this morning and got stuck on loading page (microsoft corperation and green bar but no windows logo) Eventually it flicked into Start up repair and then did something. When it completed it restarted, bringing up a black screen with option to start normally or do start up repair. Clicked start normally and it took ages again, same as above no logo etc, then brought u the same black page as above.

Booted up into safe mode, clicked restore to an earlier point.....no joy
Booted in safe mode again, clicked 'last known good configuration'.....no joy
Tried starting normally.....no joy
Tried again in safe mode and now it is getting stuck at loading files/system 32......crcdisk.sys!!!!!

After ages I got a blue screen with various things to try (as above) and checking memory but I cannot get on but it detailed the following:

***STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000006, 0x828EC03D, 0xA1507930, 0xA1507620)

Then details 'dumping physical memory files:100'

Can you help or point me in the right direction please?

It may be an indication of hard drive problem.

Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.

Thanks for this....bit nervous as I cannot be sure which hard drive it is. I have clicked on the links and then followed the instructions to try to find out...I downloaded Belarc advisor and saved to a disk but think that is wrong......so sorry, I am a learner with all this. My laptop in a hp compaq 6730b I have vista business (think it is 64).
Should I put the disc in with the belarc in and try to boot up from that....really sorry, being very dizzy!!

You'll have to remove the drive and take a look.

As soon as I switch on the computer I have tried to press delete as suggested in the link above, it just went to a black screen and gave me the options of start up and repairing or start normally. I did start up/repair, when it finished it said to start it so I did but pressed f8 as on the link above but it does not give me an option to start from C/D- my choices are safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, enable boot logging, enable low res, last know good config, Directory services, debugging mode or 2 disable options......not sure which to do?

F8 won't give you that option.
You need to check "boot order" in BIOS.

I have managed to open it in BIOS, I have put open from USB CD-ROM as first, saved everything,inserted the CD and it started loading. However, it brought back up the start windows and repair option or start windows normally so I started windows normally and now it is has just got the microsoft corperation and green loading bar. No logo or anything. Any ideas? Really appreciate your help with this.

Whilst in the BIOS menu I noticed the diognostic so I ran the start up check, the outcome was the memory test passed, the SMART check passed but the Short DST test failed. It gave me a code which I have jotted down if you need it. I also ran a run-in test and a hard disk test and both came back with the same error code and Short DST failed. Don't know if that gives you any clues?

From your test, it looks like HDD may be a problem.

It didn't have an option for just the CD drive. Is a problem with the HDD bad...I am so worried about losing all my work/photos, what next? Thanks again

Since you have some important data there, I'd suggest slaving the drive in another computer, or use USB hard drive enclosure to back up your data, before we do anything else.
If the drive is going bad, you rather back up your data BEFORE we try anything else.

How do I do that? I have an external hard drive that I can plug in but not sure how I can get the data off? Can you explain or do I need to take it to someone who can do this?

You may need to ask a friend to help you a little, if you don't feel comfortable about it.

Ok, thanks for this, I have read through the info and I think I would be better getting someone to help. I will have to take it to a speacialist and so hopefully they will sort the full thing. I will post back to let you know the outcome. Many, many thanks again for all your help...wish me luck!!
