BleepingComputer.com: Replacing Motherboard

I'm replacing my motherboard on my HP NC8000 laptop. My question is the thermal grease on top of the processor and on bottom of heat sink needs to be cleaned off and new put on. Where do i purchase this grease and what is the proper way to clean off the old grease? Thanks in advance!!

Yes it should be removed-if it is dried out a cloth with rubbing alchohol works well, if it isnt dried out I just use a damp (not soaking) damp paper towel. I would recomend using high quality grease such as this Its not to expensive, and better then your likely to find at best buy. In fact its likely cheaper. Just apply a small amount (no more then the size of a grain of rice) to the die of the CPU (the square metal thing on top of the CPU) then spread evenly over it, some people prefer using a credit card I just use my finger (make sure you clean your finger off before touching anything else in your computer) then install CPU, then mount the heatsink. Your goal is a even, thin line-it has to cover all the die so no metal is showing, but you dont want to much either.

how many times would you say a 3.5g tube of grease will do a processor install? Will this stuff go bad from letting it set if i get enough for next time? Thanks!

a lot. . .I have 2 of them, one nearly 5 years old, they dont go bad, and I would say at least a dozen different CPUs.
