$2000,that would get you some nice parts for your build ,plus by building you learn lots.
As for Dell,I cant stand them, would never buy one either after working for them, but meh thats just me.

OK everyone else is telling you to build OldFella. I'll tell you this much. I bought my eMachine 6-7 months ago. The reason I bought it was the price of a comparable MotherBoard, CPU, HDD, DVD burner, and Case ran me almost as much as the computer did. The main thing that made me purchase instead of build was my time. I was working 50+ hours a week and when I got home I would just crash and burn. So I bought mine. (Didnt help that my other PC crashed and me w/o a restore disk). I am not a DELL or Gateway fan but eMachines built an awesome computer for the price and it's upgradable so they won me over (Gateway builds eMachines)
My Current Setup ($650 w/ tax)
CPU: AMD Athlon64 3000+, HDD: Seagate 200GB, MotherBoard: MSI MS7093 w/ built in ATI 200 xpress graphics, 8 in 1 Digital Media Reader, 16x DVD Burner +/-, 7 onboard USB ports, 2 FireWire ports, 512mb RAM, reused old Monitor, XP included
Build System:(all prices from NEWEGG.com and are current)(Total $734+Shipping)
CPU: Same($170), HDD: Same($100), Motherboard: Same ($75), DVD drive: Comparable ($40), 14-in-1 Media Reader ($15), Case: Sighly Better same PSU ($50), OS XP Home ($89), Norton Internet Security ($70), Macfee Virus Scan ($41), MSWorks 8.0 ($12) RAM: ok I upped this one a little (better quality) ($36x2)
PS: Also keep in mind when I bought this system the FX55 was still the High-end AMD processor (so the MotherBoard and CPU would have cost more then)
PPS: Also nothing ever beats tech support that realy works (Got Issues....Just call 'em) and Bigfix is an awesome program(sends little tips of things you have forgotten to do or big issues ie: Defrag, ScanDisk,Virus Checks)
