2.rebooted.nothing
3.tried a diff brand of mouse.nothing.
4.checked the device manager.it just lists the mouse as an unknown device.
5.tried other stuff in the ports.like ipods jump drives..etc.they all worked fine.

Is the touchpad disabled? If not, disable it and see what happens.
Also, you said this just started happening - what is new or different since the last time it worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

And last, have you tried other usb devices just to make sure the port is working properly?

Hi,

Did it stop while you were using it? if so, what were you doing when it stopped working?

Could it be a driver update? You may want to check the driver or using system restore if nothing else.

The mouse should work with or without a driver. Does it work in safe mode?

Reboot. As soon as the system starts booting begin tapping the F8 (Function) key. You will be taken to the Advanced Boot Options screen from which you can choose safe mode.
