I have a Dell Inspiron laptop. My hard drive crashed and I purchased I new hard drive from Best Buy. I have succesfully installed XP on my laptop and everything is working fine, except I can not press SHIFT and F2 to turn on my wireless. Nothing happens when I press these buttons. I have read all over the internet and some people are able to press FN + F2 (or other combinations of keys) and this resolves the issue. I have tried all of them with no luck. When I go to device manager there are ??? marks under "other devices". If someone could please help me with turning on the wireless, Thank you

You need to reinstall the Dell drivers for your key system functions (video, audio, networking) if you haven't already done so.

If you have done so, I'm at a loss.

Do you have a Dell drivers CD?

Louis

Using the drivers disk, install the chipset driver. Reboot and then install all other relevant drivers.

BTW, be sure to go to Windows Update after the drivers are installed and download and install all updates (EXCEPT hw & driver updates - NEVER obtain them from Windows Update). And of course make sure you have a good AV installed and resident first thing.

Wait a second. Prior to this, did you install the drivers after reinstalling the OS?

No I didnt. All I have done is put in the operating system disc (which is not the same as the Drivers) and installed Xp, Then windows worked and everything else on the computer did but the FN functions. I tried doing the things i read, like pressing NUMLCK + F2 but I didnt install anything else up to this point,

Then there's no way the chipset driver was already installed. That's a bit odd from where I'm sitting.

No, you started with a new hd so I'm sure the install went fine. I'd suggest you go to the Dell Website, enter your service tag number and download the latest chipset driver from there. While you're there, you might as well download all of the drivers you need just to make sure you have the latest. Then go ahead and install them.

Also check to see if you have the latest bios version (same location as the driver downloads).

There should only be ONE correct chipset driver.
And I don't understand why you can't update the bios.

We need to make sure that you are trying to install the correct drivers.
In the beginning there was the command line.
