BleepingComputer.com: SSD care

I wonder, is there something I should do to make it hold longer? I bought it a month ago and according to speedfan it's fitness is already at 68%?? I heard that you have to have specail settings and such in windows, right?

I am interested in this also.

Have read many disable Indexing and never Defrag. There are a few other tricks which fail me at the moment.

My next build will be based around a PCIe SSD so will be watching this thread with interest as well.

Side note. I`m not positive that SpeedFan is set up to monitor SSD`s. You may be getting a false reading.

You have what I know of covered.

We have a couple real hardware Guru`s here as well as some Members who just recently built using SSD`s. They do`t normally check in until later.
Hopefully one of them will jump in with the things I`m forgetting.

I actually work for Diskeeper Corporation's Tech Support section and I've frequently come across the topic of SSD's where it pertains to performance & longevity and whether (or how) fragmentation plays a role. It's common to hear that you should never defragment an SSD volume and although this concept was brought about due to a real problem, leaving fragmentation to build up is not necessarily a good solution either. The trouble is that SSD volumes suffer a finite life-cycle of read/write cycles. Performing frequent defrags can cause this life cycle to exhaust faster than intended. Defragmenting SSD volumes also doesn't usually display a tremendous performance boost in the read cycles and therefore is often chalked up to a waste, however the write cycles can greatly benefit from defragmentation when done properly. The one trouble is that leaving fragmentation to permeate is not the solution as this can just as well reduce the life cycle by nature of causing additional read/write cycles to access fragmented files.
