How does one identify or determine whether a web site is safe or malicious when searching for antivirus utility tools while searching the internet?
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Check out the WOT (Web of Trust) Add On. It displays site's safety levels next to search results and on each site. You can also use McAfee Siteavisor

I use common sense and if really in doubt: http://linkscanner.explabs.com/linkscanner/default.aspx
I personally don't care for WOT or SiteAdvisor as their information can be and been proven to be suspect.

You can always check suspicious sites using:
-- I recommend using several different vendors when performing queries to confirm the results.
- Virustotal (Submit a URL)
- Dr.Webb Check URL Scan
- Exploit Prevention Labs LinkScanner
- Norton Safe Web
- Trend Micro Online URL Query
- Trend Micro Web Reputation Query
- Website Security Check - Unmask Parasites
- Anubis
- Wepawet
