Hi, I just got an "Anti Vira" popup. I'm assuming that's the name of the virus. It poses as an anti-virus software and starts scanning your computer. I'm running Windows XP, and I've been using Internet Explorer.

I've had viruses like this in the past, and they basically ask you to buy their software to rid the virus they installed themselves in the first place.

I'm surprised I'm able to come online, because previous infections of this type were more vicious, and once, my Windows didn't even start up. With this virus, I just had to click Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and I just terminated the process, and it actually went away for good. And then I went to Tools>Internet Options>Connections>LAN Settings and Unchecked "Use a Proxy Server."

It was a relief it worked, 'cause my Mozilla Firefox has been deactivated by another virus from the past, and I haven't quite figured out how to get it working again... gah...

I know I'm not in the clear, yet. It was probably more luck, than anything, that the virus didn't attack me with all its might.

I ran R Kill, and this was the log it produced... I guess I'll leave my computer on, 'cause from my knowledge, restarting the computer will only trigger the virus again, and I really don't wanna see what it's fully capable of doing. Hopefully the sneak peak was enough.

Please help me out, anybody.

I had to shut down the computer, and when I rebooted it, the virus was full-fledged. I couldn't even get R Kill to start up. I know that the instructions note that you should keep clicking on R Kill, despite the virus' efforts to block it, but it still didn't work. It basically just deactivated R Kill... and Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't work like it used to...

Fortunately, I tried restarting the computer, and I chose a different ID, which miraculously was unaffected by the virus. So I downloaded R Kill and Mbam on it, and I did a full scan with Mbam, which found 11 infections. I removed the deleted files, restarted, and here I am.

It seems to have done the job. I got very lucky, because previous infections were more stubborn, requiring a sophisticated number of actions.

Anyway, the virus seems to have subsided for now. Here's the log Mbam produced...

Please run another Malwarebytes scan (the quick scan is fine) and post the new log.

Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

If you have a problem downloading, installing or getting SAS to run, try downloading and using the SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner instead. Save the randomly named file (i.e. SAS_1710895.COM) to a usb drive or CD and transfer to the infected computer. Then double-click on it to launch and scan. The file is randomly named to help keep malware from blocking the scanner.

Thanks, I did everything you told me to do, until I tried to restart the computer in "Safe Mode."

It used the F8 method, and I chose to boot the computer in "Safe Mode."

And then it took me to a blue screen that basically told me there was a fatal error and the computer had to be deactivated to prevent damage.

Please download and run SafeBootKeyRepair.exe.

Once it has completed, please try booting into Safe Mode and running the scan.
