Hi Nulecule,

Try running the OTL fix in safe mode. This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer. You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Instructions on booting into Safe Mode can be found here

After running the fix allow your computer to boot to normal mode then please follow the instructions in my last post. :)

Thanks!!
PW

Hi pw,

I finally tried the safe mode but still seem to be taking forever to complete - I had to stop task for it to close.

Just wanted to let you know that my moving is complete but this infected laptop has stayed in the old place - might be dropping by to work on it's rescue one or twice a month. I am very dedicated and hope you'll be patient and continue to help me out.

Please let me know what to do next.

Hi Nulecule,

I think that your primary problem with that computer running so slow is too many processes running at one time. Two antivirus programs running at the same time do not help.

Step 1.

We can disable some unnecessary processes from running at startup.

These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

      O2 - BHO: Norton Internet Security 2006 - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AdBlocking\NISShExt.dll

Step 2.

Disconnect from the internet and disable both antivirus programs, Symantec/Norton and Avast.

See here for instructions if you are not sure how.

Step 3.

Go to Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

Remove all Symantec/Norton products.

Success?

If unsuccessful try the following OTL fix. Only run the fix if uninstalling Symantec/Norton via Add/Remove programs is unsuccessful

We need to run an OTL Fix

Hi pw,

It's been a long time. I hope you are doing well. I finally manage to complete the Hijackthis and uninstall Norton. No such luck with OTL Run fix though (sys seems to freeze halfway). Here is the OTL report:

Hi Nulecule,

We are making progress. :thumbup2:

How does this computer connect to the internet? You have a new IP address. Can you tell me about it?

172.16.48.2

This is a "Class B address space for private internets"

Considering all you have running on this computer I suggest you eliminate anything you do not use. If you can do without Bluetooth and other programs you can eliminate them to see if it helps performance.

Step 1.

Disconnect from the internet and disable AVAST to run the OTLFix. After the fix re-enable AVAST.

We need to run an OTL Fix
  • Please reopen Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Posted Image textbox.

    :OTL
    PRC - [2006/01/19 14:29:52 | 000,100,032 | ---- | M] (Symantec Corporation) -- C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\AluSchedulerSvc.exe

    SRV - [2006/01/19 14:29:52 | 000,100,032 | ---- | M] (Symantec Corporation) [Auto | Running] -- C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe -- (Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler)
    O3 - HKU\S-1-5-21-1208518450-3629674923-268441767-1005\..\Toolbar\WebBrowser: (no name) - {0B53EAC3-8D69-4B9E-9B19-A37C9A5676A7} - No CLSID value found.

    :commands
    [EmptyTemp]

  • Push Posted Image
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Click Posted Image.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

Step 2.

Update programs.

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.

-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your Adobe Reader is out of date. Please go here to update. Uncheck the McAfee scan option

You may need to manually delete older copies of Adobe Reader via Add/Remove Programs.

Step 3.

Please read the directions carefully as they have changed from the last scan.

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • In the Extra Registry box make sure that Use Safelist is checked.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTList.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

In your next reply please include the following:

Information about IP address
OTLFix report
OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

Thanks!!
PW

Hi Nulecule,

Step 1.

We need to run an OTL Fix
  • Please reopen Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Posted Image textbox.

    :OTL
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center]
    "FirstRunDisabled"=dword:00000000

    :commands
    [EmptyTemp]

  • Push Posted Image
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Click Posted Image.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

Step 2.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.

  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology

  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

In your next reply please include the following:

OTLFix report
ESET scan results
(If nothing is found there will be no report)

Thanks!!
