I tend to agree with everything jimbob said. The mini-tower is smaller than full size, which would give you:
  • plenty of room to work in when assembling, maintaining or modifying anything anytime
  • plenty of room for good air circulation around the harddrives & mobo... the hot spots
The purchase of PSU separately from the case gives you advantages, too, as jimbob stated. 350W may be OK, but 400W is more, and the wiring bundles that are provided with a case/PSU combo might not be quite as flexible as getting a "standalone PSU". Check warrenty on PSU/case, also... the case itself doesn't really need a long warrenty, but it would help to have one on the PSU.

Flashy neon is definately optional, but remember "gamers" can demand more graphically from the PC than business "power users" so listen up to some of their experience. The monitor is a crucial part of the whole picture, and you should bear that in mind as your next upgrade. I think the mobo/processor/memoryvid card choices are good. Seems like your computer will run circles around both your current one & those that were touted as very good this time last year. tongue.gif

Have almost finsished buying components for my first build. Here is what I have purchased thus far:

Antec Black ATX Mini Tower PC Case 350W PSU Model "SLK1650B" - $61 Shipped
SOLTEK "SL-K8AN2E-GR" NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb MOBO Socket 754 - $95 Shipped
AMD Athlon 64 2800+, 512KB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor (Retail) - $140 Shipped
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive Model ND-3500A BK OEM - $71 Shipped
APOLLO ATI RADEON 9200SE Video Card 64MB DDR, DVI, 8X AGP - $40 Shipped
Seagate 160GB 7200RPM IDE HD, ST3160023A, OEM - $57 Shipped after rebate
Belkin ANTI-STATIC GROUNDING WRIST BAND - $7 shipped

All have been ordered and should be here by the weekend. The only other thing that I need to purchase is 1 Gig of ram (probably 2 x 512 sticks). I'm allowing about $150 for this.

This brings the total to approximately $620 shipped.

I'm going to reuse my floppy drive. May get a card reader and video capture card at a later time.

May be able to build this weekend. This will be my first build. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Will likely need some help during the process. Thanks for the help thus far. Chad

w00t.gif nice buy, Chad!!

I try to be onsite here daily, and maybe the "live chat" will help you this weekend. smile.gif

BTW, I'm impressed with the bottomline dollar amount for what all you have got with it. Shipped, including tax. Very powerful PC... (even with 512MB of memory for starters if you like) I wish Congress could pose a question about a budget and do so well. smile.gif I'm all too aware of the thousands upon thousands of online opportunities you need to pass by to settle on a final choice.

Forgot. A few questions.

1) Will probably also get an additional fan. The Antec case comes with a 120mm fan. I'm going to add an additional 80mm. Any suggestions? Just thought of going with a low price fan. Will look through Newegg.

2) Any other supplies I'll need? I think the Antec case only comes with 1 IDE cable. Will probably need another as my HD is IDE. I assume I can just reuse this from my older PC?

Thanks Phwagg. I also thought the HD was a good buy. It is an ATA100. But from what I've read, the differece between ATA100 and ATA133 is negligible. Could go the SATA route. But from what I've read the difference in SATA and IDE at this point is not that much easier. And SATA can be more difficult to install.

If anyone else is interested in that HD, it is available at outpost.com. The rebate is from Seagate and is reliable through several others who have purchased in the past. Need to purchase by 11/11/04.

Seagate might include one with the HD. Maxtor packs 'em. I'm always one to spend an extra 10.00 for quiet if I can on fan. (don't know which is which, tho.) sad.gif

i just put an ASUS K8v se Deluxe, AMD 2800+ 64bit in my home computer
only snag that had come across was i needed a new power supply,
seemed to need the 20-pin ATX motherboard connector And one 4-pin for the motherboard, my old power supply never had the 4 pin.
any new power supply will have it though i'm sure.

Some Antec cases have a spot in the front for an additional 120mm fan, you just snap the fan in - very easy. You'll have one running as intake and the other one as exaust. I just put an SATA Seagate HD in my PC - they are great and not that much money Good luck.

I wanted to see the status on your new computer.

Have all the parts come in?

Is there something that I can help you with?

I second that. Though I know Jason knows more than me on this topic but I offer any help I can give.

Thanks for offering to help. I ordered 1 Gig of Kingston RAM for $120 after rebate. Should be in Wednesday. If I get a chance, may start on the build Wed night. As of now, I do not have any specific questions. Just did a little reading in the MOBO manual and Antec case manual regarding installing the processor, heat sink, and fan. Doesn't sound overly complicated.

I plan on installing the CPU, heatsink, and fan with the MOBO out of the case. This seems most logically to me. Unfortunately the Antec case does not have a removable MOBO tray.

If there are any common pitfalls for newbies like myself, would love to hear any general advice. I've installed CD drives, IDE HD's, and RAM before. Installing the CPU and setting up the BIOS will be new experiences for me. Thanks for all the help. As I begin installing, I'll post questions as they arise.

If you have already installed those parts before, then installing the CPU is not much different. Just make sure that the pins line up perfectly, before you lock it in. As far as the BIOS, there really is not anything that you need to do for that. It should come pre-installed on the board.

One thing that you could do, is find current drivers for each piece, and save them to a CD. When you finish with the build, make sure that you create a new restore point. After that, you can install the upgraded drivers. At least you will have a point that you can go back to, if something goes wrong. Also, for the video card, use the driver that comes with it-not the generic one from Microsoft.

Good luck. I would like to see some pics after you are finished, if you do not mind.

Thanks for the tips on the drivers. That was one of my questions. I was planning on doing some research regarding BIOS upgrades for the MOBO I'm using. Have searched some other places and it seems the one that comes with the board is sufficient. Will create a restore point as you suggested. Then upgrade the drivers. In addition to the new Segate 160 GB HD I'm going to install my old 20 GB HD to make regular backups more easy. I have a digital camera and will take some pics. Thanks for all the help.
