p.s. my son was impressed that you knew WIC, he said you were wicked smart! I told him that's why I turn to BC in times of trouble.

Computer still violently slow and sound coming from speakers on start-up of windows-xp splash is still a bit broken.
Any other suggestions before I surrender all and take this machine physically to the computer-fix-it-store? Again, thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, sometimes a clean install is the only way to save time and energy...and be sure of what is NOT wrong with the system and I applaud you for being realistic enough to accept that and get your system back up and running.
Now the trick is to keep the system as pristine as possible...and then come back to BC at the first sign of trouble, if such is necessary.
The first order of business I can suggest...back up, back up, back up...now and with regularity.
Glad you got it resolved, happy computing

Two that do come highly recommended are Avast free or paid and Aviar free or paid.
Of course keeping in mind no AV will give you 100% protection.

In addition to an updated, reliable AV program...users need to install critical updates for the O/S, in a timely manner.
There are additional procedures which should be employed...I'm not very good at listing/detailing such, but I have some links that I believe merit some review. Note the dates on some of these, the suggestions have been around for a long time...but they are basic ideas that still have merit. These suggestions come from those far more knowledgeable than I am regarding steps that any user should take...to protect the system.
