I should add that as long as I have a teenager in my house, IE is out and Mozilla is in.

p.s. my son was impressed that you knew WIC, he said you were wicked smart! I told him that's why I turn to BC in times of trouble.

You will have to download the IE installer and then reinstall IE and never uninstall it. Then you can download Firefox or locate the installer on your machine. If you cant do the above you could use maybe a friends computer and a flash drive.

My work schedule is as follows: Mon and Tues 1800 to 0600, Friday - Sunday 1800EST to 0600, and Wednesday to Thursday 1800est to 0600. So if I do not respond right away I am at work.

ok, I did as you asked, I took mozilla off. went to my zoomtown isp and clicked on it. it came up with IE. I'm taking it that that means I don't need to do the installer? what i took off was the option to choose a web browser ie., yahoo, ie, netscape etc... it comes with the computer as a trial thingy.

Computer still violently slow and sound coming from speakers on start-up of windows-xp splash is still a bit broken.

Any other suggestions before I surrender all and take this machine physically to the computer-fix-it-store? Again, thanks for your help.

Have you ever used ORCA or Safari browsers - I now always have at least 2 browsers installed in case of similar problems -
But my experiences are not the same, as now I practice very safe browsing due to earlier problems, and I Always use I.E. -

Thank You - :) -

so i did everything i was instructed to do. finally surrendered and took my computer to a fix-it shop. lots of trojans/viurus found ( in spite of avira, avg and malwarebytes scans) and then they just took the whole thing down and started over.

Well...users seem to take such much better...if we don't suggest and then they pay someone to tell them "You need to just clean install"...it's somewhat ironic :).

Unfortunately, sometimes a clean install is the only way to save time and energy...and be sure of what is NOT wrong with the system and I applaud you for being realistic enough to accept that and get your system back up and running.

Now the trick is to keep the system as pristine as possible...and then come back to BC at the first sign of trouble, if such is necessary.

The first order of business I can suggest...back up, back up, back up...now and with regularity.

Glad you got it resolved, happy computing :).

Question: Any advice as to the best anti-virus software out there? Is the free AVG trustworthy? Thanks for everything!

AVG has somewhat fallen out of favor here as one of the recommended AVs. The latest vers. has been seen to cause many a problem. Having said that, there are those that do use AVG with little or no problems.

Two that do come highly recommended are Avast free or paid and Aviar free or paid.

Of course keeping in mind no AV will give you 100% protection.

I'll just add a note to the effect that...there is more to keeping a system secure and functioning well...than installing an AV program.

In addition to an updated, reliable AV program...users need to install critical updates for the O/S, in a timely manner.

There are additional procedures which should be employed...I'm not very good at listing/detailing such, but I have some links that I believe merit some review. Note the dates on some of these, the suggestions have been around for a long time...but they are basic ideas that still have merit. These suggestions come from those far more knowledgeable than I am regarding steps that any user should take...to protect the system.
