I am going to image my hard drive so I want to clean everything up before I do it. I went in to Add/Remove Programs and removed a bunch of programs I never use any more - I see a bunch of these Microsoft things which I assume are updates - so, the question is - can I remove any of these?? I have XP Professional on both the Desktop and the laptop.

Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1
Microsoft.NET Framework 4 Client Profile
Microsoft.NET Framework 4 Extended
Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 ATL Update kb973923-x86 8.0.50727.4053
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 ATL Update kb973924-x86 9.0.30729.4148
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable-x86 9.0.30729.17

It just seems like there are a lot of updates that could be removed???

No. Leave them alone.

Are you very tight on hd space? If so, there are certainly some recommendations we can make.

Desktop has plenty of free space (222 GB plus an additional drive with 221 GB) so that one is fine
Laptop is low (20 GB Free) but I am getting a new HDD today (160 GB) so that one will be fine next week. AustrAlien is walking me through this operation!!

I just wanted to check to make sure I was not deleting anything important! :-) AustrAlien said to post it and see what I find out. Thanks a bunch. I will leave it alone.

Hi Judith -
On a general note I think most (all acording to hamluis) M/soft updates should be left especially as you do not need extra space -
When you fit the new HDD you will need to go to M/soft Updates and install these for the Laptop again -

Thank You -
XP SP3 Pro Desktop - Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium Toshiba Laptop - Malwarebytes - SUPERAntiSpyware - Microsoft Security Essentials -
HiJack This - SpeedFan - Cannon Printer - ATF Cleaner - TFC Cleaner - ORCA and Internet Explorer Browsers -
Secunia PSI - And I Use GOOGLE -

No she won't. Not if she's using a current image.
