windows search is not functioning

my windows search(alt+f3) is not functioning. all i get is search window without the normal.normally the search window comes with what to search the file name or folder name and where to search etc. now i dont get all these things. what may be the reason? virus attack? if so how can i remove it? thanks

First simple test is to try another keyboard, then think of virus scans !
If life is not an option then why are we not given the option in the first place !

I would uninstall it and then reinstall it.

I'm assuming that you installed the search tool that is native to Vista...you really don't need it in XP, IMO. But, if you like it, reinstall it.

Alt-F3 does nothing on my XP system (which does not have Windows Search 4.0 installed.

FWIW: A better tool, IMO, you may want to look at, Everything Search Engine .

thanks for the suggestions. but i don't understand what to uninstall. i am using windows xp and the search function is inbuilt with the os.

Sorry, I misunderstood :), Alt plus f3 does nothing on my system so I don't think it's the Windows search function.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_is_alt-f3_key_used_for says that key combination is for something else.
