Input Signal Out of Range

I am using a friends laptop now but I really need to get back on my own system. I was able to get enough information by doing a search with the message I recieved on my monitor. That information just states this could be a problem with the VGA cable or the video card. I checked the other monitors in the house and when I hook them up to my HP desktop, they all get some sort of signal out of range message. When I hooked up my HP monitor to the laptop the signal is fine so I'm assuming the monitor is fine. How can I tell if it is the video card or if it's a virus doing this?

That focuses things somewhat on the monitor and the device sending signals to the monitor.
Can you boot into the BIOS? Safe mode?
I believe in the obvious...the monitor works so the problem is with the video function of the system.

Does your monitor support more then one type of connection? I have seen that error when say for instance a setting was changed with in the monitor menu that told it to look for the signal from the VGA port and it was connected to the PC through a DVI port.

I really appreciate your prompt responses and your help. So far, I haven't turned the computer off yet. I'm hoping I don't have any virus or malware that could be changing my settings after I re-boot. I have Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011, Malware Bytes and Spybot Search & Destroy but they all say I'm virus and malware free. I'm hoping this doesn't happen again after I turn the computer off. THANKS AGAIN!!! Was wondering if you can leave this topic open for a few days, just in case this happens again after I turn off this comp and re-boot?

You need to change the video screen resolution in safe mode...the monitor is capable of supporting a higher resolution than your system is capable of providing, IMO.
Boot into safe mode, lower the selected resolution...then try to boot normally.

FWIW: We generally don't close threads, so feel free to post to this one if issues surface again
Happy computing

What gave you that idea?
What does the Spybot website say?
If you suspect that you have malware issues...you probably ought to initiate a post in the Am I Infected forum, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum103.html .
