Turning off computer at night How does it effect the computer?

One thing that has always concerned me about lap tops and the way I have seen some people treat them.

Leaving the power on. Regardless whether in sleep or hibernation and closing the lid. IMO, a very bad thing to do. Trapping heat with the lid\lcd screen can not be good. I have also seen people put them into a carrying case in this state. A double bad move and trapping the heat that nuch more.
