1) No you don't need to remove the battery and there is no reason you can't always use the wall adapter. I always have when I'm home.
2) SFC /Scannow does not give you a report and I don't think there was any reason to run it since your problem is almost certainly hardware related - but let's make sure. Open msconfig and do a selective startup (uncheck everything) and reboot. What happens?

I performed a selective startup, I'm back at the desktop.

And if you are in regular mode your battery may need to be replaced - it could be as simple as that since it started working after you removed the battery. However, let's make sure it isn't software. Start adding items back in msconfig one or two at a time until you cannot boot into safe mode again. If indeed boot fails after making a change it's possible the item you just added back is causing the problem

OKay, I don't know what has been done. I am working in battery mode (no adapter).
I restarted in diagnostic mode, no problem. Then in selective mode, no problem. Then I tried normal mode, no problem.
I'm completely stumped.
I just shut down - then rebooted. No problem.
I also checked device manager and I see nothing wrong.
Strange.

I'm betting that I need a new battery but it appears to be working fine at the moment.
Hopefully, I'm not back here with same issue.....I want to thank you all for taking the time to assist.

The sfc /scannow will not usually show a log for results. But in this case it does seem to indicate that it has corrected, at least for the time being, your problem. Let's hope that this is the case.

Yes, I'm guessing a bad battery. But whatever, glad you're up and running :)
