Flannelback,
Opened a new tab. But, a small box with "setup/configuration, status, utilities, help." No "security" anywhere. Maybe, not a "D" model? Should I upgrade the firmware? My modem is 3-4 years old.

Stick with Broni's advice. Let's not go updating firmware in the middle of the problem.
I'll look for your model and see what can be done. Now that I think about it though, if you haven't had problems until just recently then the hardware firewall is probably the wrong place to be looking as it wouldn't just turn itself on. By default it should be off from TDS.

Is this your modem? If it is, you can download the user manual from that page. Scroll down to the section titled "Manuals/Documentation". The first item under the section title is User Manual - GT701 NCS 3.0.1.0.6.0(that's a direct download link). It's a 9.7MB pdf file.
A good thing for you to have I think, but I would not make any changes to the modem at this point, other than turning the hardware firewall off(temporarily) if it is on.
How to configure the hardware firewall is in Chapter 4("Using Advanced Setup" pg.35), Firewall(pg.47).
Making any other changes(like updating the firmware) would only add confusion and hamper Broni's efforts in helping you sort out your problem.
Apologies for not getting back quicker. Wife decided that since it was not the eighth day of the week, it was my turn to feed the dogs and do the dishes.

If nothing else works, I suggest, you reinstall TB.

Bam! It cured itself. I was getting ready to shut down for the night. Decided to try "one more time" before I quit...bang, it sent. So, I tried another one, it sent. So, it really was a "temporary system problem." Go figure.
