When posting your problem, do not run and post a ComboFix log. ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computer. Any posts containing CF Logs will be ignored.

To receive help, you should instead provide a detailed description of your problem, detailed word-for-word error messages that you are receiving, screenshots of strange behaviour, and your operating system. This information is much more useful to our helpers than a ComboFix log.

Hi,

I have a friends computer, they were complaining they couldn't do a virus scan or get on the internet. They have an XP SP3 Pentium 4 machine. Internet explorer would not even run when double clicked.
I managaged to run the virus scan (Microsoft Security Essentials) and let it clean up what it found, then I also ran Malwarebytes & let that clean what it found. This was after uninstalling some junky software they had (can't remember them all, but things like Google Toolbar and something calling Windows Searchqu Toolbar and some others - I am so annoyed as I told them not to install any toolbars!). After that I uninstalled and reinstalled Internet Explorer, and reset to Default the Internet Options in the Control Panel and was finally able to run Internet Explorer.
Things seam to be ok until I tried to update Micrsoft Security Essentials - it would not update. So I uninstalled that and installed Avast. This appears to be updating correctly.
Problems remaining are this: Windows will not update & I am seeing some occasional re-directs when web browsing - one example is when clicking on Trend Micro's House Call. This re-directs everytime.
I have tried re-setting the Control Panel Firewall to Defaults as well.
Malwarebytes and Avast both give the all-clear.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Emma

I have just rebooted the computer and Spybot is asking about a Registry Entry change for UserInit, whether to allow a change from "userinit.exe" to "C:Windows\system32\userinit.exe,"

Hello,

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<==. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues and what you have done to resolve them.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.
