Cantankerous Sony Vaio PCG-K23 Can't Install XP

I was given a Sony Vaio Laptop model PCG-K23. I don't have the Sony recovery discs but I do have a copy of XP PRO SP2 that I would like to install. The laptop boots up to a black with the message "Operating Sytem Not Found". When I try to install XP I get an errror message that says Windows does not detect a hard drive. All input on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, OP

If you are trying to boot from the installation CD you may need to enter the BIOS and change the CD-ROM to the first device in the boot order.

When you look to see if this has been done, check to see if the hdd is being recognized.
