As Eyesee suggested...backup all valued data files to another drive/medium.

If users conducted routine backups or made images of system partitions...it would not be necessary to suggest this. Failure of the drive or file system would not seem catastrophic.

IMO, the status of the drive has not been determined...no diagnostic has been run, no loss of data or access has occurred yet. That does not mean that these condidtions will not change, without warning.

I would be prepared to replace the hard drive with a larger, newer one.

Thank you for your help in this problem. I will get the data I don't want to lose, and simply take it from there. I'll run a diagnostic when I'm sure I won't lose anything that's important...

Just a few minutes ago, I ran chkdsk.exe on the account that was not working. Upon it completing, all of the missing icons returned, and the message stopped appearing. Now my only issue is that Avast has stopped working for some reason... Not sure if it's related, but I'm trying to turn avast back on. It doesn't seem to be working now...

Try this...

open the 'control panel' select 'add/remove programs' goto Avast and select'change/remove' then select the 'repair' option.

You may also want to check/post the log of your chkdsk results. Open the control panel, select 'administrative tools' then 'event viewer' then 'applications' and look for the 'winlogon' entry and double click on it.

The problem has grown worse. I am going to need to take this issue to another forum. More errors are making this seem more and more like malware. I can only find minor bugs however. Likely I will forced to pay for repair. Thank you for helping though.
