Blue screen of death New USB HDD causes blue screen and PC re-boots

Hello and happy new year.
I am running XP professional SP2, Athlon dual core processor and 2Gb of memory. A new external SATA 500Bg hard drive has never worked properly, it started with the device not being recognised everytime it was plugged in. Now it flashes up the Blue Screen with a long message which does not stay on screen long enough to read the message. Using a MS tool which I downloaded enabled me to read the error log and this returns the following :-

With recurring copies for every time it has been plugged in. I don't know whether the HDD needs formatting bud I can't access it do that OR is the disk itself dead in the water.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We need to know more about your BSODs...

Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)

No installation required.

Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program and When scanning is done, go to Edit > Select All.

Then go to File > Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

I can see that your system is not fully updated. Please upgrade to SP3 and see if the issues continue.

Hello and thank you for your advice. I have now gone to XP 3 and XP recognises the HDD as a USB device but it still does not appear on "My Computer" or explorer, At least we have lost the "Blue Screen". Any further suggestions?
Oh! and by the way. Happy New Year to all you beeping experts. Excuse errors caused by mixing wine with beer!

I now find that the HDD is listed as mass storage on Device Manager. But it does not appear on Disk Management on Admin tools so still unable to format disk.

Well I copied the screenshot of Disk management screen to MS Word, selected it, copied it but it will not paste into this forum for some reason.If there is a better way of doing it let me know. If it is any help, it displays the correcr details of my 2 disks and partitions but nothing as removable storage.

You post create a screenshot with prnt scrn then open up Paint go to edit then paste and save it. Upload it to a site like http://www.imageshack.us and use the following code here:
