BleepingComputer.com: Re Install Disc How to

following what I thought was a problem, sorted now, I decided to make a re-install disc, with the Service Packs 2 and 3 , slipstreamed.
I found the "How to" in the Tutorials Section, but the first thing it says is that the reinstall disc I got with the PC from Dell, is of no use !!!. So where do I start, or am I wrong ?

In order to slipstream a new install CD you will need a full retail copy of the XP install CD corresponding to the version you have a license key for (i.e. XP Home, XP Pro, or XP MCE.) You might look on sites like Ebay for one.

This is due to OEMs ("Original Equipment Manufacturers") like Dell customising the CDs they ship with their computers to include special software, drivers, recovery tools, etc. which muck up the whole slipstreaming process. I should also point out that if your XP license key came with the computer from Dell then it won't work with anything but the original CD they shipped with it. So, you may have to find a retailer who is still selling new XP licenses in order to proceed.


(You may be able to make a slipstreamed CD from your Dell CD, though I've never tried it so I can't help much there.)
