Kaspersky's online scanner either has moved or no longer exists. This link: http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html yields a 404 error.

I was looking for a bit of freeware to hard code some subtitles and came across this bit of freeware it is made up of 3 bits of freeware VirtualDubMod, AviSynth and Xvid and its called AVI Recomp
http://avirecomp.com/news.php
I have used it a few times it is simple to use but it does take a long while to do the job (about 3 hours) and the results are good and it does much more

AVI ReComp allows you to recompress your AVI files. The application supports not only the files containing audio streams but AVIs without any audio as well. For the time being the program uses only XviD codec to recompression process (versions: 1.0.3 or newer). The installation pack contains all required components (VirtualDubMod, AviSynth and XviD).AVI Recomp contains a feature of embedding subtitles into video. So if you want burnt in subtitles, you can use this software.

AVI ReComp supports AVIs with the following audio formats: mp3, wav, ac3, ogg. Supported subtitle formats: TMPlayer (.txt), MicroDVD (.txt / .sub), SubViewer2 (.sub), SubRip (.srt), Advanced SubStation Alpha (.ass) and SubStation Alpha

I've just registered yesterday and I don't feel good about brenging in a bad topic but according to Web of Trust the domain dl.installiq.com which program Core Temp under catagory System Information is linked to has severe security issues :radioactive: . Also Installation interface did not respond to Alt+F4 and it disturbed me tremendously by loading the program and whatever goodies goes with it to my laptop, instead of quitting when I clicked on Decline, as clean programs always do. I should've pulled the plug immediatly but I was in sort relaxed mode reading through the pages, not expecting something like this to happen. I removed the program afterword but I got worried about malware that might have been installed with it; because from what I know this is a sign of malware that is invested in the installation software. :ranting:

Sorry fellows, I am calling it off; I have enough malware already.

Please remove all my data and information about me from your servers.

hi long time since my last visit
I have looked through the freeware list twice
and I did not spot MKVToolnix in there
I wanted to add some subtitles directly onto a mkv video file so it appeared hard coded
and I needed to do it quick
this little tool came to my rescue,it's a great little bit of freeware imo
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Other-VIDEO-Tools/MKVToolnix.shtml
MKVToolnix is a software that allows you to merge and create video files with the MKV format, as well as view technical information on them.
The user interface of the program is plain and simple. You can input videos by using the file browser or the "drag and drop" method (batch processing is supported).
So, you can select and arrange tracks, chapters and tags. But you can also configure general track, format specific and extra options.
You can edit the track name, tags and timecodes, as well as select the language, default and forced track flag, and set the output filename.
Furthermore, you can change the aspect ratio, display width and height, charset, cropping, cues, compression, user-defined options, and more.

are the subtitles for your movie out of sync
no worries
I been using this for a little while now and I have no complaints
very easy to use as a beginner even without an instruction book

Subtitle Edit is a free (open source) editor for video subtitles - a subtitle editor :)

With SE you can easily adjust a subtitle if it is out of sync with the video in several different ways.
You can also use SE for making new subtitles from scratch (do use the time-line/waveform/spectrogram) or translating subtitles.

How about a section for file sync software, there a quite a few freeware ones that work very well, and unfortunately others that are not as good, can help if you want a list?

Sorry this was meant to go in "freeware replacements for commercial software" Mod Edit: Merged into correct topic ~ Hamluis.
