XP install, i think i got the problem figured...

Been having nothing but trouble since re installing operating system. How can i quit everything and start over? I have not been able to get a internet connection due to a missing network adapter and i don't know how to fix the problem. I would rather start all over again and start clean. I honestly think i missed something or did something wrong during the installation. Thanks.

This usually is nothing more than having to reinstall the driver for your network adapter. Did your computer come with a CD/DVD with the drivers on it?.

Yes it did, but, after i thought everything was installed and ready to go where i could start installing other stuff i had i could not and still cannot get an internet connection. The drivers must have not installed properly or i just messed up something. it keeps telling me that i cannot get an internet connection because i am missing a network adapter. I'm going nuts here. I just want to start over unless someone knows how to fix this mess. I tried reinstalling the drivers CD but not a whole lot happened. I'm probably doing something wrong.

Start/Run...type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

I think i figured out why the network adapter is not being recognized. When i click to try to get on the internet, the computer tries to do a dial up connection. I don't think that is right. Tell me what you think.

When i click on IE or MSN to try to connect to the internet, it tells me there is no network adapter recognized, the computer has been doing a dial up attempt. I don't think that is right, and i think that's my fault. I think it's something i didn't do right during XP installation. However, the connection between the router and the computer is good because the light is on at the connection indicating a good thing.

In Internet Explorer (cancelling any attempts to dialon the way):

Click on the Tools menu
Click on the Internet Options menu item
Click on the Connections tab

You should now see something very similar to this:

Make sure, "Never dial a connection" is CHECKED.

Then....

Make sure, your computer is set to obtain IP address automatically.
1. Go Start>Settings>Control Panel (Vista/7 users: Start>Control Panel)
2. Double click Network Connections (Vista/7 users: Network and Sharing Center)
3. Vista/7 users - From the list of tasks on the left, click Manage network connections.
4. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.
5. From the General tab (Vista/7 users: Networking tab), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties
6. Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK.

Nothing is working so far. One thing i forgot to mention though, it also tells me that no software for the internet connection is being detected. Wouldn't it be easier if i just started over with the ops system install? I've been dealing with this stuff since Friday afternoon.

Everything is now up and running. Thanks a bunch to all who tried to help. I finally got on the phone with Dell and they walked me right thru it. It turned out to be pretty easy, only i was not looking in the right places even with all the help. I have learned a lot thanks to all of you. One more thing, how do i download service pack 3?
