Greetings. I'm having problems with my netbook locking up/freezing. It is not specific to one software but rather happens to anything I have open soon after starting up, even Event Viewer/My Computer. Scanned with Avast,Malwarebyte's,SuperAntispyware,Spybot,Eset Online scanner & Hijackthis and no suspicious files.

The only relevant info I have from Event Viewer is:

Quote

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 07/12/2010
Time: 14:29:48
User: N/A
Computer: [Removed for privacy]
Description:
The HID Input Service service terminated with the following error:
The specified module could not be found.

Quote

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
--->> clicked on this link and it mentions file: netevent.dll

From Services I then disabled "HID Input Service" from automatically starting up and that seems to have resolved the problem, but is this a permanent solution? What will happen if I leave this permanently disabled and what else can I do to identify the cause of this problem?

After many fruitless days I think I found what the problem behind the freezing was. I reinstalled Avast Free edition and I haven't had any freezing or errors in the event log since. I cannot be 100% sure it was Avast but I think one or more of the website monitoring components became corrupted, although there was no indication of this and it was only through desperation that I chose to uninstall my AV and firewall (Comodo) to see if it would make a difference. So if anyone has similar issues try reinstalling Avast.

Aghh, it's happening again. Now I'm not so sure whether it was Avast. I get random lockups in XP. Same HID input service related errors. I looked at services.msc and my HID input service is not starting up even though it is set to automatic. Press start on it and I get the following error:

"Could not start the HID input service on the Local Computer.

Error 126: the specified module could not be found."

Can anyone help me diagnose this? I don't have any disc drive on this notebook so don't have a way to install XP again. For some reason I don't think this laptop can install via USB either.

Thanks for your help. I only have on average about 10 minutes before it locks up. I have attached speccy report. Attached File  Speccyreport.txt (13K)
Number of downloads: 6
And here is a screen shot of performance in my task manager if it helps:

I also noticed a new error in Event Viewer that has never come up before:

When I came back to the computer after the restart the system locked up again, so I do not think the problem is solved.

I am not sure whether it makes a difference. To test I disconnected the logitech mouse for a couple of hours and did not experience any lock ups, but since yesterday I haven't had a lockup with a logitech mouse either. I am in a 'good period' as I like to say. It would be very strange if this were an issue with the mouse because I've been using it for over a year without any problems. It is genuine plug and play.

The lockups seem sporadic and not related to what I am doing/interface device. Sometimes occurring as soon as Windows starts (e.g you go to Start and it just locks up) and other times within about 10 minutes. There are good periods (when it will never freeze for the whole sessions) and there are bad periods (where it will freeze 3 or more sessions in a row) I could be looking at Event Viewer or browsing the net with either IE7 or Opera and it will just hang. I can open task manager but I cannot recover from that and I have to hold down the power button to switch it off.

Since I performed chkdsk the freezing has only occurred once, but am unsure whether that has solved it bearing in mind it's sporadic nature.

I am not even entirely sure whether those errors in Event Viewer are related to the problem. From my online research it seems freezing may not generate errors in Event Viewer.

Btw - One of the reasons I chose to uninstall Avast last time was that there was, occasionally a yellow warning triangle appearing over its system tray image on startup. After a while these would disappear. It seems that this sluggish startup of its components were a symptom of the problem rather than the cause. I never get software related errors in Event Viewer therefore, I think that whatever is causing this problem is system/hardware related.

I appreciate your continued support because I don't think I have any way to install XP again on this Toshiba R100 Portege notebook.

I would remove the Logitech Mouse or update its drivers to the very latest if possible, and see if the issues completely go away with either steps. First, I would update your drivers for both the mouse and the computer if possible.

Go to Toshiba's site, and see if you have all available hardware driver updates installed.

I will update all drivers and report back if the freezing continues.
*I have the latest drivers for this laptop*
*I am installing setpoint as it is the only thing available on the website for this cordless click plus mouse (I prefer not to have setpoint installed though, but am willing to test whether problem goes away)Is it necessary to have setpoint on startup list?

Btw - Before reading your info I got another lockup as soon as I booted up (no relevant Event Manager errors) I clicked on those two arrows on the taskbar to see all my programs and it just locked up.

I am sorry to report that the freezing is still occurring. It happened twice today when I was browsing the net with no associated Event Viewer errors. May I remove setpoint now and does anyone have any more ideas as to what might be going on?

Btw - If a moderator is reading this would it be possible to edit the thread title to 'random freezing' to reflect the nature of the problem more accurately? Thank you

Can you try creating another account on the computer, and see if the freezes happen under the new profile?

Unfortunately the freezing is still occurring with the new profile.

There is no obvious indication of overheating, how would I know?

How would I be able to remedy a corrupt install on this Toshiba R100 portege laptop since it does not have a disc/floppy drive or the option to boot from USB?
